Hi guys! I know, its been a while but I really haven't forgotten this story. I'm sorry it has taken be so long. This story is drawing to a close now and I'm super excited. I hope you like it!!! ^_^

Mads stopped the car on the side of the road next to a deserted picnic table overlooking the ocean. My tears had dried by then but I still didn’t want to move. It had been a couple of hours since I had said my goodbyes to Alex but it felt like only a moment. The scene replaying in my mind like a broken record was not helping my emotional stability.
“Mads?” I asked, uncertain of what was going on. My best friend looked straight at me with a serious expression on my face.

“Get out.”

“What?”

“You heard me.” I did as I was told and unclicked myself. I had never see Mads with such a serious face before, not since her pregnancy scare back in high school. My stomach dropped as I glimpsed the ocean, the same ocean that I had been with Alex, the same goddamn ocean. I sat at the picnic table and watched as my best friend rested against the railing and sighed.

“What’s going on?” I asked. She turned to face me and a small smile touched her lips.

“Kay, I love you. You know that, right? You wanted to go on this road trip so badly, so of course I would agree. You wanted to join that stupid play in high school but needed support, so I joined up too. We’ve been through so much together and we always try to be honest with one another.” She sat down next to me and rested a hand on mine. “I let you down, Kay. I didn’t speak up when you agreed to marry Dick; no I let you down before then. I knew he wasn’t the right guy for you. You seemed content though. I now realise that you weren’t happy.”

“Mads-”

“-No, please let me finish. I won’t let you down again.” She squeezed my hand and the gesture made my eyes water again, just when I thought I was running out of tears. “Whatever happened with Alex, you two need to fix it. I won’t sit back and let you walk away from the one guy that has made you truly happy.” A knife twisted in my heart, tighter with every word spoken. “Don’t say anything. I know you want to see Richard again, I get that. I just want you to know my feelings before you do.” I didn’t say a word and embraced my best friend tightly. A single tear rolled down my cheek and a weight was lifted from my shoulders.

The solid stone wall should have intimidated me but the unfriendliness of the building fuelled my resolve. I was going to be done with this part of my life. I was going to move on and I was going to find happiness. Mads stood beside me and nodded with confidence before I pressed the doorbell. Footsteps could be heard walking towards us and I inhaled sharply. The door swung open to reveal, Matthew, Richard’s housekeeper.

“Miss Katherine, lovely to see you.” He greeted us politely. “And Miss Madison, a pleasure, always.”

“What’s up, Mat?” Mads teased the older man. My best friend had always made an effort to make the elderly butler, Matthew, uncomfortable. She had only come with me to Richard’s house on a handful of occasions but each one contained a complaint session about the butler on the way home. I, on the other hand, never had a problem with Matthew. I thought of him sweet in his old age and polite ways.

“I would like to speak with my ex-fiancé.” I said firmly.

“Miss-”

“-Please don’t bother, Matthew. I know he’s here and I will speak with him.” I interrupted. Without another word spoken, I dodged the butler and moved into the house.

“She’s on fire, get too close and she’ll burn you.” I could hear Mads laugh as she walked in behind me.

The house was as perfect as a picture, not a thing out of place and not a speck dust. Whether Mads liked or not, it was clear the older gentleman had a way of keeping the house in order. The high ceiling and large glass windows seemed to expand the house into another depth. To think at a time I had found these four cold stone walls comfortable, now they were lifeless to me as a museum. Mads must have forgotten how large the building was as I watched her secretly admire the architecture. She was trying hard to appear disinterested and for that I felt a new level of love for my best friend. She was the only one who would have agreed to come on this crazy rollercoaster of a road trip with me. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without her. Once this was all over, I was going to ensure she was treated to a dinner and movie of her choice. I would even go and watch one of her foreign films with those tiny little subtitles you have to read at the same time you watch the movie.

“I believe Mr Cummins has just slipped out for a swim. May I get you ladies something to drink?” Matthew offered.

“No thank you, Matthew.” I said.

“I’ll take a coke with ice and a slice of lemon, oh and with one of those little umbrellas!” Mads exclaimed. The butler stared, straight-faced at my best friend and I had to fight not to laugh.

“Very well, Miss Madison.” The older man agreed with a stiff nod.

“Matthew, run a hot bath for me, will you?” a voice called ahead of the man entering the room. It was as if time stopped. I turned to see my ex-fiancé strut into the room with only a towel around his lean hips. I simply stared at the man; I had once agreed to marry. He had obviously been swimming in his personal lap pool even when he lived right on the ocean. He was more of a pampered soul than one to catch a wave, another difference that separated the two men in my life.

“Mr Cummins, Miss Katherine and Miss Madison have arrived.” Matthew stated the obvious. I would have smiled at the bluntness of the butler but this wasn’t a happy visit.

“Thank you for your perceptive skills, Matthew.” Richard said politely but the words were jaded with venom. He regarded Mads before placing all his attention on me. My face must have been serious enough for him not to smile at me, the way he used to. The times when I had been proud to see this man by my side were now shrinking. This man, he was the one that had caused me so much pain and sorrow? The time had finally come for me to face him. He should have hid himself better. I wasn’t just sad now, now I was angry. He had more than ruined my wedding day; he had broken my soul and made me hurt another. He was going to answer to his crimes and he was going to answer to me.

“What’s wrong, honey? Not going to welcome home your fiancé?”
