I think I have done pretty well with this update...if I do say so myself - with the speed of my updating I mean. :P Hope you are all well. Those of you near holidays...we are nearly there! Woot woot! Please vote or comment or whatever works! ^_^

[There is some mature content in the way of Kay's thoughts this chapter. I am pre-warning you all. Nothing too graphic but I felt I should let you know!]

“So what will the rules be for this bet?” Alex asked looking between Mads and me.

“You can ask the bartender any question but there must be an equal amount of guys and girls you ask.” Mads instructed. Alex nodded in obedience.

“Should we base it on phone number collection?” I suggested.

“To be sure, am I allowed any physical contact with the subjects?” The fireman inquired.

“Oh yes, you may give a little pleasure to entice; however there can be no kissing on lips. Agreed?” Mads jumped in.

“You really think you’ve got this in the bag, don’t you?” I asked, looking the man up and down, taking in all of him and his arrogant smirk.

“Was that meant to be so graphic?” the male voice snapped my eyes to meet his teasing ones. Oh my god! I had done it again. Foot in mouth Kay, foot in mouth! I was basically playing into his hands. Curse this mouth of mine.

“Shall we begin?” I changed the topic. “The bet I mean.” I completed my statement before anyone could take it in the wrong way.

“Sounds like a plan. If you’ll excuse me ladies, I have some hunting to do.” Alex bid us farewell and shuffled through the crowds for his first victim.

“McSmoke?” Mads thought out loud.

“Are you honestly making Alex some kind of character off Grey’s Anatomy?” I laughed at my friend.

“Well McSteamy and McDreamy are gone but both would have worked in this case. Maybe you should be the namer though, you are drooling over the guy.”

“Let’s not forget the fact that I was only engaged yesterday.” I shook my head. “And anyway he is Craig’s little brother. He is younger than me.”

“So what? Makes you a desirable cougar.”

“I’m not going to dignify that with a response.”

“How’s our little firecracker doing anyway?” Mads spun on her side of the booth and prompt herself up on her knees to see over the heads of all the diners. “Oh my god, Kay, you’ve got to see this!” She wiggled in her stance from laughter at whatever was attracting her attention. I sighed and made my way over to kneel in the same position as her and peer over in the direction of her gaze. There was a man stretched over three and half bar stools, his shirt off revealing a mouth-watering six-pack and rippling arms were folded to support his head. Sitting on the man’s stomach were three shots, slices of lemon and salt covered a small surface of flesh. My own stomach twisted in knots as two blondes and a brunette stepped up to the man, hands behind their backs. The man of course was none other than Alex. I shook my head at the immaturity but couldn’t draw my eyes away.

“Are they honestly going to do tequila shots off his stomach?” I almost inserted some wildly inappropriate adjectives to describe that stomach but resisted the temptation. Temptation, that was definitely what I was fighting right now. It was completely irrational. I had only properly met the fireman today and I wasn’t a completely free woman, not yet anyway. Not till papers were signed and I knew why the hell I was fiancé-less or should I say husband-less?

“I believe that answers your question.” Mads’ voice brought me back to the event at hand. The three girls, probably the same age as Lucy-Bree, were now giggling and squirming as they licked up the salt and sucked up the shot. I unintentionally wet my lower lip. “Feeling turned on yet?” I nudged my friend and she laughed, falling back into a sitting position away from the attraction. I stayed a moment longer, just long enough to lock gazes with the man making me act like some lust-filled teenager. He winked at me. I don’t know what expression I gave in return but whatever it was, it seemed to please Alex greatly. What was with this guy? He was doing something completely different to me than Richard or any other one of my other boyfriends ever had. Richard and I had always had a very sophisticated relationship. We had a routine. I would have prepared dinner for his return home from work and he would bring me either flowers or a bottle of champagne to apologise if he was late. That’s how it worked. I was used to it. I had been dating the guy for almost two years; I knew his work was important to him. The trashing article that had been the cause of all this sprung back into my mind. The girl, Misty, had thought her boyfriend was always working late at the office. What if every time Richard was late was due to him being ‘tied up’ by someone else? Some other woman?

I felt my playful side dying as I slid down to Mads’ level.

“Hey, what’s wrong sweetie?” I couldn’t speak for a moment. I didn’t want to ruin the day. We were enjoying ourselves so much too. “Kay?”

“I was just thinking about…”

“Richard?”

“Yeah.” I sighed and took a deep breath in. “Sorry to dampen the mood.”

“Don’t say that. Never be afraid to tell me what’s on your mind. This road trip is about you. I don’t want you to keep any thoughts of Richard out of conversation. Maybe it was too soon to change directions so fast?” There was a questioning tone in her voice and a part of me knew she was right.

“I still love him, Mads. As much as I hate him for hurting me. I love him.” I sniffle, holding in my tears. I didn’t want to make a scene and definitely not in this sort of place.

“It’s ok to still love him. God, you guys were dating for ages.” Mads rubbed my shoulder affectionately. “Do you want to go?” I considered the offer. Just pack up and leave Alex and my unanswered question behind. Could I really walk away from it all?

“I need answers. I need to know.”

“Well then let’s find out everything you want to know.”

I sat with Mads, taking slow, deep breaths to calm my mind and think about other things. I didn’t want to think about Richard. For some reason I had this almost tugging feeling inside me. Like my body knew exactly what it wanted. And it wanted…

“And here is the man of the hour!” Mads announced the return of Alex. He had a giant grin plastered across those smug lips of his.

“Ladies, that was possibly the very best bet I have ever participated in.” He chuckled and slumped into the seat opposite us. “Did you enjoy the show? The women here are animals. Animals I tell ya!”

“We know, we saw.” Mads winked. “So let’s see some phone numbers shall we?” Alex rose from his seat again, yanked at his pockets. Napkins fell over the table with digits scribbled all over them.

“Holy crap.” I gasped.

“Oh and…” he raised his shirt, revealing that body of his again and multiple hickies. Beside one of the hickies was a phone number written by an obviously drunk hand. Mads and I couldn’t contain our laughter. I knew she was laughing at the achievement but I was laughing at how much I wanted to erase the number with my own tongue. I screamed at myself in my head, knowing I shouldn’t be switching emotions so quickly. At one moment I was mourning the disappearance of my future husband and the next I want to jump the damn fireman.
