"Absolutely not." I said firmly, crossing my arms under my breasts.
"It will be fun, Kay." Mads smiled at me encouragingly. It wasn't going to work. I was not going to get on that dangerous thing.
"I could be killed. How is it, you don't care?" I threw up my arms, exasperation plainly present in my voice. Alex shifted uncomfortably, shuffling the weight on different feet.
"I've been riding my whole life, you won't die." He sighed. "What's wrong, girly?" I glared at him and then to my best friend. Was she seriously asking me to get on the back of a motorcycle and roar down the highway at ridiculous speeds?
"Can I talk to you for a minute?" I hissed as I dragged her to the side and in hopes out of the fireman's ear range. "What are you trying to do?"
"You need a pick-me-up from last night and it will be fun! Look, you can come in my car with me but haven't you always said you wanted to do something outside your comfort zone?" I was determined not to let on about the kiss from last night as that had been definitely out of my comfort zone. Just the small thought of it had heat rising to my cheeks. Now was not the time to confess my sins. "Don't you want to straddle that gorgeous man over there?" I didn't look at Alex, knowing it would just lead to me losing the argument.
"One, I'm not going to answer that and two, they are dangerous."
"Kay, seriously, Alex has been riding for years and you are wearing jeans and covered toe shoes. You are more than protected." Mads pointed at my outfit of the day. "Although, maybe not enough for other things?" Her raised eyebrow made me laugh and completely took the fight out of me.
"Oh alright, how bad could it be." I shrugged and followed behind Mads back to Alex.
"So what's the verdict?" He glanced at both of us.
"I'll ride with you for a little while." I said as casually as I could. I didn't want to let on how much my fingers were urging to touch him again. Apparently, their silent pleads were going to be answered.
Mads said she would meet us once we arrived down in Port Macquarie and she would organise all accommodation for the three of us. She sped off with all our bags at a record pace and I could almost sense the smirk on her face.
"I didn't know you were heading to Sydney." I watched Alex carefully as he zipped up his leather jacket.
"A friend of mine is getting hitched and I'm coming down for the wedding." He looked me up and down and placed a hand on my bare shoulder. "You can't wear a singlet like that on the bike."
"What do you suggest? Mads just took all my stuff." I crossed my arms again. Was I really going to have an argument with him before our road trip had officially commenced?
"I always bring a spare." Reaching in the side bag of his Harley, Alex brought out another leather jacket. He slipped it over me and I slid my arms through the holes, trying not to touch his skin directly. "It's a bit big but at least it will keep you safe and warm." He agonisingly slowly moved the zipper in the motion of enclosing it around my body. I flicked my eyes up to lock with his and regretted the decision to stay for the hundredth time that minute.
"So, let's get going." I said as cheerfully as possible and skipped over to the bike, waiting for him to sit down. Alex got comfortable on the bike and I took another deep breath before I swung my legs over and sat down.
"You are going to need to hold on tight. Just hug my waist."
"You better make sure I don't fall."
"I'd never let that happen." The words were almost cut off by the sound of the engine groaning to life but I still caught them. What was he saying now?
The wind whipped loose strands of my hair around and tangled the ends of my ponytail together. It was the most incredible sensation of fear and freedom I have ever experience.
"Just let go and enjoy it." Alex called over the roar of the bike. I wasn't sure if trusting him was a good idea but I decided to do exactly that. I kept my hands tightly around his middle and allowed myself to just let things be. I forgot about Richard and the wedding, I forgot about my dysfunctional family and I forgot about being alone again. At that moment nothing else mattered.
"I feel so alive!" I screamed, to be heard by my driver but also just to scream. I was rewarded with a chuckle from the man in front of me. "Is this what it feels like every time you ride?"
"I have to say, it is a lot more fun now then it usually is. It feels good, huh?"
"Good? It's amazing! I feel like I'm soaring! Nothing can touch me!" Another chuckle.
"Oi, soaring eagle, we are about to take a turn so hold on tight and just lean with me." The instruction made me gulp back a squeak but I did what was asked of me. I snuggled in closer and rested my cheek on Alex's strong back. I knew he wouldn't let me fall. All I had to do was trust him. It was surprisingly easy to permit Alex to lead me. My heart beat thundered in my ears and I knew the motorcycle wasn't the only reason. My fingers were tingling and my ears were pumping but it felt right. It was a moment of perfect bliss. I glanced over to see the ocean and a small beach unoccupied by any inhabitants.
"Look at the water, it's beautiful!"
"Wanna go take a closer look?" I nodded my head and knew he had felt it as Alex pulled the bike over to the car park probably used mostly by passing surfers.
"I honestly thought today was going to be terrible and now look at me. I can't stop smiling!" I laughed, stripped off my shoes and jacket and rolled up my pants, avoiding getting them soaked before racing down to the water's edge. The ocean lapped at my feet and sent ripples of pleasure up my spine.
"It has been a while since I've been swimming." Alex stood beside me with his clothes in the same condition. I felt my cheeks heat up just a little. He seemed to finally remember what happened last night as he continued. "In the ocean, that is."
"We could change that." I smirked and before he had a moment to response I splashed him with water. Droplets trickled down his jaw line and plopped back into the sea. I watched as his face turned into a smirk all of his own and he leaned down to the water. "Oh no you don't!" I squeaked as a wave of water washed over me. I was soaking from head to toe. He let out a belly laugh and doubled over to demonstrate his amusement.
"You look ridiculous!" I bet I did but I wasn't about to let him get away with it either.
"You are so dead!" I growled playfully and splashed more water at him. Alex went on the attack and gave me the same treatment. I was too busy focusing on gathering as much water as I could that I didn't notice the fireman come up behind me and swing me up into his arm. "What are you doing?" I giggled as he tickled me.
"Going swimming." He said simply before dropping me into the ocean. I was not about to let him get away with it so I grabbed on to his shirt and drag him down as well. Alex lost his footing and landed directly on top of me. I couldn't help but laugh again at the mess we had made of ourselves. That was the point that I lost all my senses and reasoning before I could stop my actions. I looked straight into Alex's eyes and kissed him.
