One of my favorite things is writing cake Drabbles about things they do irl, while neglecting my actual fics in the process.

Cake had a thing.

Now, many friendships and couples have inside jokes and traditions that only they understood, but Calum and Luke always seemed to take it to the extreme.

It started young, when they would create words and motions that they'd use to communicate something to one another.

When Luke first started doing covers, and 5sos just started becoming a thing, he got bad anxiety about it. About singing.

What if people didn't like him? What if he wasn't good enough? What if no one took him or his music seriously?

Luke already felt insecure enough as it was, so those thoughts that circled throughout him before posting a cover or doing a gig didn't really help him.

The kneeling thing, that's so oh so popular in the cake fandom, started before 5sos was even a thought. Luke was lying in his bed the night before a school gig, bunches of nerves in his stomach. His crappy cellphone was clutched in his hand, as he debated who to call.

Ben, his older brother who he was closest to was away at university. He and his older brother Jack couldn't have a two minute conversation without it getting physically violent.

And Luke, had friends. Sort of. They were acquaintances who talked to him occasionally, but the reality of it was that the music thing just wasn't cool, and people didn't risk getting too close to save their reputation.

Luke's finger hovers over Michael's contact name, but he decides against it. Even though he doesn't give him those murder glares anymore, he can't shake that weird vibe that Michael just can't stand him. And he's only met Ash once, who stood up for him, but he doubts he wants to hear about his life problems.

Luke sighs as he realizes there's only one person left.

Calum.

Now, don't get Luke wrong. Calum's great. Only, that's exactly the problem. Calum makes his heart race, and crowds into his thoughts way too often, and makes him brighten and feel at home and it scares the shit out of him. He feels like that's how a girl is supposed to make him feel, but he's only ever felt that way with Calum.

It rings twice before Cal picks up.

"Hi, Luke?"

"Yeah, hey. It's me." There's a pause.

"It's nice to hear your voice," Calum says honestly. Luke's stomach flips.

"Yeah?" Luke feels alive there, sitting in his room late at night knowing Calum Hood, football star wanted to talk to him.

"Yeah. Always wanna hear from you, Luke." Pink taints the blonds boys cheek profusely.

"Oh stop it, Cal."

"What's wrong, Lukey?" He knows him so well. Luke shrugs even though Calum can't see him.

"Nervous. i have a gig at school tomorrow night, and my family can't make it. And...lately I've felt just scared, all the time and...i don't know..." He feels embarrassed for ranting, but it also feels good to get off his chest.

"I'll be there." Calum says simply.

"What? No, you have practice."

"Fuck practice, you need me there, I'm there."

"I swear to batman Calum, coach will kill you." They made up 'i swear to batman' in 7th year because Luke didn't like taking the lords name in vain. It stuck.

"Screw coach. I'll be your cheerleader, and I'll hang out with you afterwards so you aren't alone. I'll even drag Mikey, too. You're an amazing singer, Luke. You deserve to be watched." Luke is smiling now, all nerves gone.

"Thanks, Cal."

"Now go to sleep, I'll stay on the phone with you."

~~~
Luke felt like he was going to literally throw up. Like full on. He was backstage before his performance, and he kept peeking out behind the curtain and the audience was full. Full besides his parents. He pulls his phone phone out and sees a few texts;
From Mikey Mouse: good luck, fucker
Mikey Mouse: also i can't see your hair but i know it's lame.
Luke rolls his eyes, but is used to that from Michael.
From Cal-Pal: peek again.
Luke slips his phone back into his pocket, and just as he does the intercom starts to speak.
"Luke Hemmings will be performing a few originals! Give him a hand!"
Fuckfuckfuck.
He grabs his guitar, and steps out in front of the curtain. There's a stool in the middle of the stage, so he takes a seat. The nerves are out of control now, he feels like he can't breathe. He searched the crowd, and stops when he sees Michael and Calum in the front row. Mike looks uninterested, and Calum is shooting him an encouraging grin.
'i can't do this'  he mouthes to Calum. 'Yes you can' Cal mouthes back. Luke shakes his head. Everything looks a little blurry...
Luke doesn't understand. He posts covers for thousands to see, he does school gigs all the time. Why is his family not showing up fucking up his whole game? Was it because it's an original song? Suddenly, Luke looks up And Calum is getting out of his seat. Oh god, what is he doing?
He kneels down on one knee in front of his seat, gazing up at Luke. He points to his knee, then to Luke. "This means; I'm here for you. We got this." Luke laughs, feeling giddy, they are always making up stuff like that. This one meant the most though. He starts up his song, eyes never leaving Calum the whole time.
~~~

The 'we got this' kneel stuck around. It stuck when Calum and Luke were in a band together, not aloud to come out, so they kneeled on stage to prove they'd make it through.

It carried on later, when Calum proposed to Luke, kneeling and grinning knowingly. Luke has smiled and said "I swear to batman, of course you idiot."

They had inside jokes and traditions and music and money, but at the end of the day they knew all they needed was each other.

End.

I love cheesy cake,, hA.
