“We need to talk.”

The commotion awhile ago had subsided. Erica seemed back to normal now, though, obviously she was putting an act. Kat was always there by her side to try to cheer her up but she was waiting patiently for Erica to open up. I was enjoying the desert that Erica’s mother prepared when my sister Jo approached me.

“What about?” I asked her. Jo creased her eyebrows.

“What you said to Erica…

“Yes? What about what I said to her?”

“Kuya, you didn’t tell me that the person you love is right under my nose from the very start. It’s Erica, isn’t it?” There was a tone of hurt in my sister’s voice. I nodded solemnly to confirm her postulation. I saw the fire in Jo’s eyes. She could be really angry right now. She had every right to be, I guess.

“I knew there was something going on between you two! How could you? I can’t even—I don’t know how to react. I’m shocked and disappointed, but maybe I’m mad, especially at Erica. How can you keep this from me? I thought she was my friend and you’re my brother! But I guess you both didn’t trust me well enough to talk to me about this. Do you know how stupid I feel?”

“Jo, please. If you’re going to be mad. Be mad at me and only me. Leave Erica out of this. She already has a lot under her sleeve and it’s her birthday.”

Jo heaved a deep sigh. “I have a feeling there is still something I don’t know. There is still something you guys are not telling me.”

“Yes, Jo. But I can’t talk to you about it. Not now.”

“And why not? I’m your sister. She’s my friend. I think I deserve to know.” Jo insisted.

“Yes, you do. But it has to come from her. It’s still her choice to share or not. Personally, we haven’t talked about it as well.”

“Fine.” Jo crossed her arms in frustration. “I’m going to wait for her to open it up. Whatever secrets you have, you know you can trust me, right?”

“Of course we can. It’s not the trust issue, Jo. It’s the perfect timing and like I said, right now, Erica has a lot under her sleeve. We don’t want to add to her problems.”

Jo nodded understandingly. I was just glad she was not very insistent or impatient about it. She understood of course. She witnessed what happened with Erica and Tristan, though she didn’t know the full story and so didn’t I nor anyone else aside from Erica.

Jo suddenly looked at me with apprehensive eyes. “If indeed Erica is the person you love, why aren’t you doing anything to woo her?”
