Seven came by faster than I expected. To be honest, my heart was filled to the brim with excitement. By now I'm sure that was obvious. The little adrenaline rush was coming for a visit, too. Haven't seen the little guy in a while. The sound that I've taken quite a liking to finally came. The famous knock on the wooden door. Upon opening, it was as if life had smashed a vase with the label "CUTE" on my head. The label also had a skull and crossbones indicating how dangerous this adorableness was to the human eye. On the steps was Jin, in a red and black checkered flannel, holding flowers. Such a swindler.
"F-For you. I figured since this was a couple party..." He fumbled over his words and handed me the roses.
Deja Vu was pounding against my skull. This moment reminds me so much of that night. The night I fell in love. Two years ago at the 8th grade banquet was where it all started. I can clearly see myself wearing the glimmering (F/C) dress again and struggling to walk in the heels. The now 16 year old Jin standing before me morphed into the 14 year old one, still holding the same roses. The same roses he handed to me that day seemed to time travel to the present. That night, just as the rest of the kids were dancing hand in hand, the unexpected happened. A sudden, yet sweet kiss on the cheek. That's about as close to love two 14 year olds can get. All this reminiscing about the past in less than a few dreamy seconds. Thinking about it all just made my heart flutter. A part of me still hopes he hasn't forgotten about the puppy love moment.
"Aww thank you, Jin! These are beautiful. Just let me put them in water and we'll be on our way." I went inside and filled the glass vase with water to the top and slid the flowers in. The aroma was lovely. As I was getting ready to walk out, the "CUTE" label that magically materialized just stared back.
It was a bit chilly even with my sweater on, so I wrapped my arms around his as we were walking. The sudden touch startled him, meaning he was jumpier than usual. I could tell he was nervous. "Jin." I stopped him and tried to make my voice sound as calm as physically possible. "It's gonna be fine don't worry. What's the worse that can happen? We're just having fun." He gave a reluctant nod to show he understood. He made an effort to stay calm and carry on a conversation.
"So this Pinewheel place, do you know it?"
"I've heard about it. I checked and it's apparently not too far away from here."
Half an hour later, we arrived to 273 Pinewheel avenue. Let's just say I was just as confused as when we got the invitation. I knew Brooklyn was a girl you shouldn't get involved with, but I didn't know she'd swoop this low. The "party" was being held in some type of abandoned run down store front. The entrance was tiny, but once you went downstairs, that was no longer the case. There was a narrow staircase leading to the action. Techno music boomed louder with each step we took. Shit looked like the underground concert venues from Guitar Hero. This whole area looks suspiciously sketchy... The unmistakable smell of drugs and trouble snaked into our noses. Jin stopped just as we were about to open the door scribbled with incoherent graffiti.
"I think we should turn back. This doesn't look right." It really didn't. But we were already here so it would be such a waste to just leave.
"Relax, Jin. Remember what I said before."
The place looked like a strip club. So unnecessarily dark yet bright at the same time. Neon lights were flashing everywhere yet I couldn't see my own hands right in front of me. I could see Jin though. As a kid he didn't really have the looks to make panties drop, but now that I look at him in this lighting and wearing those clothes, he does look pretty hot. Weird thing for me to say as his friend, right? The thing is that after all this time I've come to the realization that I don't plan on being just his friend. I quickly scanned the area. Food and refreshments, over there. Dance floor, center. DJ, further center. Bar, to the right. Freaky door locked and chained up with a sign that says "KEEP OUT", left. Rebellious teenagers, everywhere.
"Hey I'm gonna go and get us some drinks okay? Don't move. Or do you want to come with me?" No response for anything. I let him be and went to the punch bowl. There are some pretty weird people here... A guy who looked not too much older than me was staring into the red liquid and yelling at it. At least it was a different sight, and not girls slobbering all over boys like I saw earlier. Ximena was right about the "couple" aspect...
"WHAT ARE YA LOOKIN' AT HUH?!" He sensed me there and quickly turned around. Our eyes met for a split second. He kinda looks like...
"Hi ha... how... are ya'?" His words were disgustingly slurred. I'm surprised he was even able to introduce himself. "I'm Jackson."
Jackson? I know a Jackson. It must be a weird coincidence. This can't be happening. There was no denying it. It was Jackson Wang. Jackson Wang from elementary school. I couldn't believe my eyes. My childhood friend that I thought I'd never see again was standing right in front of me, completely drunk. I knew he looked familiar... It took him a minute to realize who I was.
"(Y/N)! I thought I'd never see you again. How you doin'?!" He hugged me tight and I returned the affection.
"Jackson what are you doing here? I thought you moved. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled to see you, but why in the world are you getting drunk? No matter how much time passed you're still underage." He stayed silent. "Well if you don't wanna talk about it that's okay. Oh I just remembered I have a friend waiting for me. It was nice talking to you, but I gotta go. We can catch up later!" As I tried to leave, a wobbly hand tugged onto my shirt.
"Not so fast lil' missy. Why don't you stay and take a few pics to commemorate our delightful reunion?"
"Oh you want pictures? Sure why not." He called his friend Eddy with the Polaroid camera over to take some for us. We posed with our drinks and each other. The first few were normal, but after a some time Jackson started acting very strange...
"This should switch things up a bit."
He poised one of my legs under his arm while I put mine around his neck. Oh lord this looks super sexual... but Jackson wouldn't do anything to hurt me... right? He leaned in, our mouths a millionth of a millimeter away from touching. I don't know if it was his way with the ladies or just the atmosphere of the place as a whole, but I got lost in the moment. He was being awfully touchy and tried to lower down my bra strap. Did nobody around us find this strange? Of course not, we're in a hoodlum gathering for Christ's sake. My body was not moving. Why did I let him do as he pleased? Eddy was ready to take the picture of death.
"Smile!"
Just as the camera flashed, at the punch bowl was a pair of painful eyes, watching everything that had happened. I chased after him, ignoring the freshly printed picture falling on the floor and being swept away by the cold, unforgiving air of the night when everything I loved was taken away.
