Chapter 1

I ran through the woods.  I was being chased by something I couldn't see, there was no time to look back, no time to stop. I tripped over a rock and fell over. The beast turned out to be a way overgrown lion with the hardest fur you could imagine. It prowled around me until it lunged for my throat...

I woke with a start. I was sitting in my bed sweating and panting.    I've been having dreams similar to this for months.   Whether it's an overgrown lion, a bloodthirsty coyote, or even a pack of rabid raccoons, the ending to my dreams is always consistent, I get killed.

I climbed out of bed to the kitchen where my mom was making bacon and eggs.

"Any better luck last night Serena?" She gave me a sympathetic look as she repeated the question she had asked every morning since these dreams began.

"No,  same as always," I replied grabbing a slice of bacon, "Is there any kind of doctor I can see about this?"

She tilted her head, "I'm sorry dear, I think this is beyond what a doctor could handle," her voice trailed off.

        "I figured," I replied, defeated.

My mom's eyes suddenly went wide, "Serena, when did these dreams begin again?"

I thought for a moment, "I think about two months ago, why do you ask?"

"Specifically, do you remember?" She said with a hint of urgency in her tone.

I thought for a moment, "I think it was the day after I had that big sleepover with Maine and Jen," I replied.

Her eyes misted over as she stared in deep concentration, "Baby, I think we're dealing with something much bigger than the both of us."

"What do you mean?" I asked, "Mom? Mom you're scaring me."

There was a roar in the distance that sounded like buckling rock.  Mom snapped out of her gaze and stared me in the eyes, I had never seen her so horror struck, "Serena, you need to leave," She ran to the kitchen window and her knees went soft as she turned to me, "Serena you need to leave now!"

        "Why? What's happening?!" I cried.

"Don't ask questions baby there's no time, go to Maine's house, " She wrapped her arms around me, "I love you," she held my head in her hands, "I'll see you soon okay," She kissed my forehead and ran me out the door.

Chapter 2

I ran. Maine lived about a mile away from my house.  When I got there I saw the lion I had dreamed about, my knees buckled as I remembered how it had pounced at me, completely defenseless.  I wanted to turn and sprint the opposite direction.  Then I saw Maine in her backyard hiding. She looked so scared, I knew I needed to help her somehow.  I crept past the trees in her back yard, when I got to her side in the bushes and poked her she screamed, turned, yelled my name and gave me a bear hug.  Her face was soaked in her own tears.

"What are you doing here?  Do you know what's happening?" Maine cried.

"My mom told me to come, Maine I don't know what's happening here, I wish more than anything I did."

Maine's attention drifted from me to behind me, she was frozen in terror.

I turned around and saw the lion.  My blood ran cold.  I couldn't think, I couldn't understand anything.  I felt like I was drowning and everything went silent.  My eyes closed.  I knew this was the end, that I was about to die.  Then there was just this itch in my soul.  This yearning to just let go.  I let everything in my body release.  Suddenly, I wasn't drowning, my body was engulfed in a sudden warmth, I felt more alive than I ever had.  I opened my eyes to see my world flickering red and orange.  I realized I was literally on fire.  I turned back to the lion and felt a soar of adrenaline.  I felt like I was flying, I could feel all the energy in my body reacting at my fingertips.  It was suddenly like I was living in slow motion.  The lion jumped through the air, ready to tear through my throat.  I outstretched my hand toward his open mouth and shot the fire down his throat.  I knocked him to the side and he laid, curled up in a ball of fire, dead.
