EMANUEL'S POV

I stared down at Violets perfect face. She was asleep in Bobbys couch. I couldn't believe that I let her get hurt, it was my job to protect her and I failed.......again.

She coughed gently and I wiped the blood from her mouth. Ever since the incident in the garden, she had been coughing up blood.

I stroked her face gently. She was too perfect, she didn't deserve to be like this. The optimistic thing I could think of was that her pulse was steady.

"Emanuel,"

I turned and saw Chris in the doorway.

"What?" I snapped

"Listen dude don't bite my head off! I just wanted to see how Violet was doing," he said

"Still the same," I said sadly.

"Well maybe she'll wake later. You don't know what might happen........"

"Its been a day and a half Chris! If she was going to wake up then why hasn't she!" I screamed.

Anger boiled inside of me. "This is my fault!"

"Emanuel you can't take the blame for this, it happened on my watch too,"

"Ya well this isnt the second time something like this has happened."

"What do you mean?" he asked sitting next to me.

"When she was.....getting kicked out of heaven.....I was there. As they were taking her Essence she screamed and screamed and I did nothing to stop them! I can still hear her screams, begging me to do something and it haunts me every night. And I can't go through that again Chris, I just can't"

It was the first time I had told anyone that story, not even Violet knew.

"I am so sorry, I didn't know," said Chris sympathetically.

"That's because I never told anyone,"

Chris tapped my shoulder supportivly. I appreciated it but at this point, nothing could make me feel better. Violet stirred beside me. I looked down, clutching her hand.

"Violet? Violet answer me, can you hear me?" I whispered frantically.

"Emanuel," she whispered "It's not your fault,"

"I don't understand!"

"Don't blame yourself for what happened to me, here or in heaven."

"Violet just open your eyes,please!"

"You know how this is going to end Emanuel, my vessel couldn't handle me. It's better this way."

"Violet, you can stop this just please open you eyes!" I begged

"Emanuel will you do something for me?" she asked

"Of course Violet, anything"

"Kiss me one last time?"

I leaned in slowly, trembling. My lips found hers and before I knew what was happening, we were kissing. It was soft and tender and I savoured every second. Violet pulled away first.

"Emanuel," she whispered

"Yes Violet?"

"I love you!"

"I love you too!" I said, choking back my tears. I knew what coming.

"I'm so sorry."

Then she opened her eyes and they shone such a blinding light I was thrown off my chair. When I looked back up all that was left of Violet was a scorch mark of a pair of huge, feathery wings.
