I looked over anything else I needed for I finished packing my backpack, mostly food and clothing, I remembered to include a pocket knife or two. I planned to go and get them myself.
Downstairs there was a couple of loud bangs. I looked out my window to see there men in black suits. Shoot! I raced down the stairs to warn my parents not to open the door but it was too late. I peeked behind the wall opposite from the door and tuned in to the conversation.
" Is this the house of Marie and Joe Salas, family of five?"
" Yes but it's only two, not five." Dad lied.
" Don't lie, you have three kids: Mani, Allieah, and Kai Salas. Where is Mani?"
"I don't know what you're talking about." Dad puffed his chest and made himself a barrier between the members and mom.
It was too late to back away when the man in the center locked eyes with mine. Shit! Dad followed his gaze and looked horrified when he saw me.
"Hey-"
Dad planted his feet on the ground and pushed the agents to prevent them from entering.
"Run Mani!" He yelled.
I sprinted up the stairs to my room to escape through the window, there was small metal balcony that led to the roof of the apartment/house. I raced up to the top, slipping and falling multiple times because of the rain.
A few steps later and the sound of a gun shot three times, stopping me from my tracks. It came from inside. I looked down at my window.
"Mom? Dad?"
Silence.
Tears swelled, blurring my vision further along with the rain on my face. Should I go back?
"Don't go back. Run." An unfamiliar voice echoed in my head. "Leave now."
I took it's command and ran up, one man jumped out and followed after me. I didn't have spectacular powers that could push him off the stairs from afar or lock him to the metal with some metal bending so I had no choice but to run. It wasn't hard to create distance between us when I reached the top but there was nowhere else to escape to. All the surrounding apartments were too far to take a leap and the closer houses were still a few stories lower. Even if I took that jump, not only would I most likely break something but the roof tiles looked too slippery to let me have any grip. What was I thinking!?
"What do I do?" I cried.
In what had felt no longer than a minute, the agent had finally arrived at the top. The dark skies prevented me from getting a good view of the dark man but occasional bolts of lighting stroke closer and closer allowing split seconds of light to reveal the figure coming closer as well. There was nowhere to run and I was cornered, what to do.
As light flashed brighter, I helplessly stood at the edge of the roof only to witness his arm raise ever so slowly. His hand held a gun, is it the same one that shot my parents?
"There's nowhere to run Mani." He growled. " Hate for things to end like this, but a guy has gotta do what a guy's gotta do."
His voice sounded deep and raspy, if he weren't trying to kill me, I would of found it pretty hot but I'll pass on this one.
"DON'T SHOOT HER" A voice shouted from the stairs, another agent. "We need her ALIVE!"
"What's the point of keeping her if we have the younger two? They're all the same thing!"
"No! They're not! She's got what they don't"
I do?
The two agents remained to bicker. Judging from the two, the man with the gun seemed more younger than the other- which would explain the impulse he radiated. The other looked bigger in size but had a limp stand, from an estimate I would say he'd probably be in his thirties.
While the two bickered I searched around me for another escape route, still nothing. Below me I pondered the jump once more, maybe I was nuts or just desperate but I took the chance. Before I leaped, the younger agent caught on and fired: a sharp pain pierced my left shoulder. From second thought, I instinctively reached forward and held onto the edges- a choice I immediately regret. The burn grew fiercer and I screamed out in pain.
" What the hell have you done?! We're supposed to keep her ALIVE!"
"She tried to run, what else would I have done?"
Their heads peeked over the edge and locked in on me. The older one extended his arm, offering assistance. I didn't want to take it.
"No!" I refuse to give myself to them.
The older man softened his voice, " If you don't take my hand, you'll die. You don't want that- WE don't that!"
I refused once more. The stretch my arm took and the weight I held killed my arm and I couldn't hold much longer. The water stung my eyes and I closed them. Should I? What if they're lying?
A loud crack of lightning whipped just above us and I flinch. My arms were too exhausted and the movement cause me to lose grip and I fall.
Ravi where are you? I'm falling!
Before I could shout out loud, I was embraced. I tightened my arms around his neck in relief. A feeling in my chest burned and warmed my body, drowning out the cold, wet air around us. Everything felt right except for one thing, he didn't feel as broad as Ravi did... Who is this?
