Jody Got Ways

I woke up the next morning with a slight hangover. I got out of bed slowly. I went over to the kitchen and made myself a cup of coffee. As I was sitting on top of my counter I started to recall the things that happened last night. I remembered being way too lovey dovey with Jody, a girl I just met. She was really cool. I guess it's been awhile since I've had a girlfriend. Since the tour began I felt a bit alone. The only other girls on tour with us were Wendy and Lisa but I kept my distance from them for obvious reasons. I do have a best friend back home but the tour and the fame has made me distant from her.

While lost in my thoughts I get a call. I answer it to hear that it was my manager.
"Sheila! Good afternoon darling. I've been ringing you up all morning", he explained with his heavy Boston accent.
"Sorry Jim. I went out late last night. I don't even remember what time I got home."
"I know, I know. It's the typical life of a rocker. Listen darling. I'm calling to let you know that the American Music Awards association wants you to preform at this year's American Music Awards!" He shouts.
My heart nearly skipped a beat.
"Don't mess with me Jim."
"Baby, if I'm lying, I'm dying."
"Oh my gosh!" I screamed as I put my phone down and jumped up and down in excitement. I got back on the phone.
"Who's the best agent?" Jim asked.
"You Jim! I love you!"
"Love you too darling."

I couldn't believe it. I quickly grabbed the phone and started dialling my parents.
"Hello"
"Papa."
"Sheila?"
"Yeah dad it's me."
Tears started streaming down my face.
"Hey baby girl. We missed you down here. When are you going to come visit us?"
"I know Papa. Very soon I hope. Things have been crazy lately. I just got back from travelling around the country and touring."
"I know baby girl. I hope you're getting enough rest. Don't exhaust yourself."
"I know Papa. I'm calling to let you guys know that I'll be preforming at this year's American Music Awards!"
"Oh I'm so happy to hear that. Hold on a sec."
His voice sounded further away.
"Maria! Our little girl will be preforming at this year's American Music Awards! He shouted, telling the news to my mother.
My mother then got on the phone.
"Is this true Sheila!"
"Yeah mom. It's true", I assured as more tears started flowing from my eyes.
"We are so proud of you baby. Come by to visit when you can. We really miss you. We'll be watching the day it airs."
"I know you will mom."
My father then gets back on the phone.
"Baby girl, I knew you were special. I always knew that the world would see it too."
"Thank you Papa."
"Where's Prince? Make sure when you come you bring that boy here. We all can't thank him enough. I would love to jam with him again soon".
"He's even busier than I am Papa. I'll be sure to tell him."
Prince had come over once. He had dinner with my family and jammed out with my father and I after. I remember Prince being all shy. He later told me he was shocked to see such a supportive family dynamic and reminded me to be grateful.
Hearing those words of support and love from my family really meant so much. It gave me the extra strength I needed to go on. It's a tough business. You have to have a thick skin to make it through. My mind trailed off to remembering what Prince did to his own best friend. I've seen this business change people and cause ripples in families. When I worked as a percussionist for Marvin Gaye, he always had body guards around him protecting him. Little did he know that his own father is the one he really needed protection from. He was shot dead by his own father. I don't want this business to change me.

Thinking about Prince made me remember what happened between him and I. I remember how he left me just standing there like a fool. I started cringe at the thought of it. I felt so embarrassed. Suddenly while drowning in my thoughts I hear the phone ring. I picked it up in anticipation.
"Hello?"
"Hey Sheila."
"Hi..."
"It's Jody."
"How did you get my number? I thought you gave me yours."
"Girl, Jody got ways. Anyway I'm just calling to let you know that being a little tipsy last night I might have let it slip that you like Micki".
My heart rate increased.
"What now? First of all I asked if he was single. I never said I liked him."
"You didn't have to. Anyways please don't be mad."
"Who did you let it slip to?"
There was a brief pause.
"Micki."
I felt my eyes roll back.
"Girl you did not."
"Listen he drove me home and it just slipped. Anyways, it was only cuz he mentioned your name. He wanted to know what you were like. When I told him you liked him he said he wanted to meet you formally", she explained.
"Oh...", I was scared but relieved he didn't take it badly.
"Sheila, he said he thinks you're pretty. Come down to our studio and meet him", she insisted.
My face started to heat up a bit. I was feeling extremely flattered.
"Okay. I'll be down there in an hour. Just give me the address."
"Does that mean you're not mad?"
I sighed.
"No."
"I can breath now. You'll thank me for this."
"Okay, see you soon."
