A week has passed since Vic's proposal and I couldn't be happier. Every morning I woke up with a smile on my face and every night I went to bed with a smile. I laid in bed with him now, my chin resting in my hand as I looked up at Vic. "Do you think the wedding should be soon?" Vic smiled.
"The sooner the better," I chuckled, nodding.
"Sounds like a plan," I put the pen I had between my teeth and frowned, in thought. "When should it be then?" I asked.
"Maybe in August, when it's cool outside- not too hot, and not too cold," I jotted it down, biting my lip.
"Sounds perfect,"
"Just like you," I rolled my eyes.
"Hush," I leaned up and stretched my arms out, a yawn escaping my lips.
"Well, I've got to go to band practice. I'll see you later," I sighed quietly, leaning up and attaching my lips to his. "I love you,"
"I love you more," I grinned.
"Not possible," I giggled and shook my head, giving him one last kiss before letting him leave again. My phone suddenly started ringing and I picked it up, setting it to my ear.
"Hello?"
"Hi, this is your doctor speaking. I'd like to remind you of your appointment today, you're coming, right?" Oh god. I completely forgot. I cleared my throat, grabbing some clothes and running to the bathroom.
"Of course! I'll see you there." I hung up and groaned, running to the bathroom and smoothing my hair back. Now, I have no time for makeup. I always have an annual checkup for safety and today's the next one. I quickly got dressed and ran out the door and to the car. I drove down the road to my doctors office, which was close by. Clearly I was already late, which is why they called. I opened the door and the bell hanging from the front of it chimed, signaling I was now there.
"There she is. You can come on back," he took me into another room to check my height, blood pressure, and sight quickly. "Follow me," I nodded and quietly followed behind the doctor into another room full of metal instruments. "Today's your lucky day- free cancer tests. It's free, for some odd reason. Just go with it," I nodded slowly, holding out my hand. I extended a finger and the doctor pricked it to get my blood tested.
Once that was done he motioned for me to follow him and he took me into another dark room. "Alright I want you to lay on this table for me," I nodded and followed his ordered, laying on my back on the table. "Now a machine is going to go over you but please don't move, it's scanning you." I closed my eyes and listened as he stepped away.
The sound of the machine almost taunted me as it traveled over my body. For some reason I didn't feel right currently. The X-ray was over quickly and the doctor told me to sit tight while he got my results. The time waiting seemed endless as I sat there, swinging my legs and hoping that any second the doctor would step in and tell me that I'm fine and I can go home. Not soon enough he came back, a clipboard in his hands and a frown on his face. "I looked over your X-rays, and-" he paused and looked me in the eyes. "It doesn't look too good." My heart dropped.
That can mean anything. "What's wrong?" My voice was almost in a whisper. Normally the doctor comes in the room with a friendly smile but today he looked serious.
"I looked at it for a long while, and I've come to the conclusion that-" he sighed. "You have cancer, (y/n). Breast cancer." I felt a pit in my stomach growing at the words. My mouth hung open and my gaze was on the floor.
"What do I do? Will I survive? I-" he cut me off gently.
"We'll send an information packed with times for your chemotherapy," I gulped and frowned. Why me? Why now, when I'm fully truly happy with Vic, able to wake up and go to sleep with him. Now, I have to spend nearly my whole life at the hospital.
"What do I do?" I breathed out, completely shocked. How can this doctor be so calm about the situation?
"Live your life to the fullest. With beast cancer death rates aren't high but they aren't low," he sighed. "I'm just warning you," I nodded slowly. There's no way this is happening. I left the office completely in tears, the entire drive home filled with broken sobs and thoughts about losing Vic. I quickly got out of the car and grabbed the papers with the results, running inside and shutting the door behind me.
I slid to the floor, my hands covering my face as I sobbed into them. How am I ever going to tell Vic? I lifted myself from the floor and set the papers on the counter, breathing out and picking up my phone. I dialed Vic's number and put the phone to my ear. "Babe, I love you but I'm practicing right now, I-" I cut him off with a sob. "What's wrong?" His voice was alert now.
"You need to come home," was all I said and then hung up. I sat myself on the couch, the papers that told me my life could end or continue in a matter of months. I closed my eyes, resting my head against the side of the couch and trying to control my breathing.
"I got home as fast as I could, what's wrong?" Vic's frantic voice filled my ears and I shot up, holding the papers tightly in my hand as I cried. "Please tell me (y/n),"
"I went to the doctor today," I explained. "And-" my lips quivered. I can't get the words out. "Read this," I handed him the papers with the results and he unfolded them, his eyes scanning quickly over the entire paper. He looked up at me, his eyes filled with confusion as he blinked slowly a couple of times.
"Do you have-" he couldn't say the words either. I nodded slowly, my lip quivering. He immediately dropped the papers and wrapped his arms tightly around me, kissing the top of my head. I cried into his chest, squeezing him tightly so I'd never let go. "We can fight this," he whispered to me, holding up my chin.
"How?" I croaked.
"You're a strong person, (y/n). You've been through so much in your life and your still here. We're going to make the most of every day and fight until we can't fight anymore, do you hear me?" I laughed slightly and nodded, setting my forehead to his.
"I love you," I looked into his eyes, the words seeming suddenly heartbreaking.
"I love you more," I smiled and placed my lips to his, letting my mind wander to another world where I wasn't sick. My fingers traveled through his hair as we kissed, tingles racing through my body.
"I can't ever lose you,"
