Ryder
“Ryder, Chocolate or vanilla?” My mom asked while looking at the two flavors of cake in her hand. She knows that I have always liked chocolate. Why would she really even ask?
“Do you really have to ask?” I shouted from across the room, while I was waiting at the door for my friends to get here.
“Chocolate it is then” my mom said annoyed. Like, always Rae was the first one here. When I opened the door, Rae was standing there with a huge grin on her face holding a tiny little box. When I asked her what she was so happy about, she told me that she was just happy to see me. More people started arriving within 15 minutes. We all went to the backyard to play some games. Everyone was really excited when my mom walked outside of the house with a giant cake and a tub of ice cream! On top of the cake were some miniature basketballs and the words “Happy Birthday Ryder!” in bright blue frosting. Everyone sang happy birthday to me and at the end I made a wish and blew out the candles. I wished that Rae and I could stay best friends forever. No matter what! I really hope my wish comes true, because I can’t imagine what it would be like without her. After cake and ice cream, my mom brought out some bags and took us all to the side of the house. Hanging on a tree was a huge piñata the shape of Spongebob. My mom passed around bags and handed me a crow bar. Everyone laughed.
“Sorry baby. I couldn’t find the bat.” My mother said while laughing.
“That’s ok! This will be more fun anyway!” I said. Mom blindfolded me and spun me in circles. Then I heard her tell everyone to move out of the way. When I started swinging, I heard some screams and more laughing. I decided to turn the other way. After a few swings at the air, I felt it hit something.
“Kill that thing Ryder!” I heard Nick, one of my best friends, say from behind me. I swung harder. It hit again. After hitting it a few more times, it was Nick’s turn. We kept passing around the crowbar and blindfolding everyone. When it was finally Alex’s turn, my other best friend, the piñata burst open and candy flew everywhere! Everyone scrambled to the ground to pick up as many pieces of candy as they could and threw it into their bags.
After three games of tag, opening my presents, more snacks and drinks, and a basketball game, people started going home. I saved Rae’s present for after everyone left. When the last person left, we ran far out into the meadow with her present and she sat criss-cross applesauce with the little box in her lap. I sat down too. Once again, she smiled really big and handed me the box. I was beginning to really love that smile! As I opened up the box she said,
“As long as your wear this, we will always be best friends!” I asked her to tie it on right away and told her that I would never take it off! I turned my wrist around getting a full view of the whole thing. It was a thick, dark brown leather bracelet.
“Well what do you think?” She asked.
“It’s the best present I have ever gotten” I said with a huge smile.
“Oh man! That’s a relief! I thought that you might end up hating it because it wasn’t anything crazy expensive or super fancy. I wanted to give you something from the heart.” She explained.
“No, but for real I love it” I told her. She smiled in reaction.
“Good, I am really happy to hear that!” She exclaimed. I looked down at my hand nervous about what I was going to say next, and then looked up to her.
“Listen I know it’s my birthday but I have a surprise for you too.” I waited for her reaction, but she just looked confused. I looked her right in the eyes and started to lean closer, but I noticed she became surprised like she knew what I was trying to do. Before she could say anything I closed my eyes and kissed her. The next thing I knew, she jumped up and was yelling at me.
