Ryder

It hasn’t even been a day here and I already don’t like it. I finally figured out my feeling for Rae and some punk had to start hitting on her and ruin it. Her new friends are also already more important to her then I am. After lunch I decided I should probably go and unpack my stuff. I have no idea who the counselor said my roommates were, but I am praying it is no one bad. I open the door to find the guy who was hitting on Rae standing across the room staring back at me. Shit, kill me now.

“Hey dude, I’m Landon.” He said sticking his hand out. I dropped my bags and ignored the handshake.

“Ryder,” I said with a nod.

“Hahaha that was a funny thing you did this morning. I thought you were saying that you and Rae were together. I totally misunderstood your sarcasm.” He said as I started to put my stuff away in my drawers. I take it he already talked to Rae again. She must have explained the whole not dating that weirdo thing. I quickly grabbed my swimming suit and went to the bathroom. I would rather not spend any more time with that freak then I have to. As I walked back into the room, I threw my clothes on my bed.

“Going for a swim. See ya.” I said quickly. He said something as I was leaving, but I didn’t bother to listen. Once I got to the lake, I swam out as far as I could go. I floated out in the water until it started to get dark. I swam back in and wrapped the towel around my waist. Once I got back to the cabin, I realized that Landon wasn’t there. Thank God! I took a quick shower and went to bed.

By the time I had woken up, Landon was gone. I got ready and went down to the mess hall for breakfast. It was pretty early so not a lot of people where there. I sat at an empty table and started eating. Over time, the table filled up with a bunch of other guys. They were all talking about sports and guy stuff, so I joined in. There is no use of being a loser while I am here. Most of the guys were pretty cool. They were definitely not people who I could hang out with all the time, but for now they would have to do. Only a few names really stuck in my head though. There was Mick who kind of seemed like the leader of all of them, and by far the coolest. Then there was Luke. He was crazy big and buff. Not trying to be mean or anything, but if I had to guess I would say steroids are most likely a part of his “12 egg breakfast” that he claims he has every morning. He was cool but definitely someone who would end up with a punch in the face for talking way too much. There were also a couple of guys who all looked about the same and didn’t say much. I heard a few names but all I could remember was maybe a Chuck, Tim, and Spencer.

The last name that I remember was Vinnie. This dude was 250 at the lightest. He was so fat, that when he first sat down I thought the bench was going to crack in half. He always talked with his mouth full and he never stopped talking.

“Last night I had a dream about this really hot chick. She was running down the beach in a swimsuit. Her boobs were bouncing all over the place! It was really hot.” Vince was saying. This is not the kind of conversation that I wanted to have at breakfast. For some strange reason, it reminded me of Rae and how she totally blew me off at lunch yesterday.  Now that I have just figured out how I really feel about Rae, she seems to be pushing me away more than ever. Maybe this was happening for a reason or something. I don’t know. I’m a guy. We tend to know nothing about any of this. I am so clueless right now. I just want to punch someone. I zoned out everyone else around me until I finished eating. I overheard some of the guys talking about the basketball tournament that was supposed to be happening later today. I can’t wait until we play. I really hope Landon isn’t on my team. I could definitely kick some butt and not feel bad about it.

I got to the court and grabbed a ball to shoot some free throws with while waiting for everyone else to come. As more and more people started to show up, I saw Rae walking in with the blonde chick from yesterday. I smiled at her and she smiled back. That was a good sign right? The counselor who was in charge of the basketball game showed up about 20 minutes late. He had everyone who wanted to take part in the game sign their name on a piece of paper. He told us that the teams would be announced after lunch. The rest of the morning was spent practicing on the basketball court. I couldn’t help but get distracted by Rae trying to shoot a basket. She was horrible. I looked over and saw her blonde friend shooting some hoops. She was actually pretty good at it. It was already really hot outside and it was only morning. Rae still looked beautiful even with sweat dripping down her face. She didn’t even acknowledge my existence. I have got to keep her out of my mind.
