Rae
My mom woke me up this morning with a big grin.
“Rae, honey. Get up! I am taking you out shopping today to pick out some shoes and a dress to wear to the dance tonight!” she whispered into my ear.
“Mom, I don’t think I am going to go. I don’t feel good and I don’t want to risk getting anyone else sick.” I explained.
“Well, will you be kissing anyone?” she asked.
“No, mom.”
“Then you are going!” she dragged me out of bed and into the bathroom with a towel. She turned on the shower and told me that we would be leaving in an hour. When I got out of the shower and put some clothes on, I walked downstairs to see my brother sitting on the couch. He laughed at me when I walked into the room.
“Look into a mirror lately?” he said while laughing. I ran into the bathroom to look in the mirror. Oh my god! I had mascara running all the way down my face and my eyeliner was smeared all around my eyes. How embarrassing! After I ran upstairs and fixed my makeup and hair, we left for the mall.
After shopping for what seemed like a thousand years and my mom fighting with me over what shoes to get, we finally made our purchases and walked to the food court. I was starving! My mom and I split a sandwich from Subway. We used to always split our food when I was little. The drive home was full of her comments about how pretty I looked in my dress and how flattering it was. She kept saying how she is so proud of me and she even started crying about how fast I was growing up.
“My little girl is getting too big! I can’t handle it!” she wailed. I felt like I needed to just give her a huge hug. I hated seeing my mother crying. I have got to admit though; she is a really pretty crier.
It was an hour and a half before the dance when I started getting ready. My mother did my hair while I did my makeup. She curled it and put it in a fancy little up do. When I put on my dress and shoes, my mom started crying again and saying how beautiful I looked. Why is she so emotional today? She took a bunch of pictures of me before we drove to the school. I waved goodbye as I got out of the car and sighed wondering what I just got myself into. This was going to suck.
When I first walked into the gym, the first thing I noticed was all the lights hanging from the ceiling. It looked really nice in the gym! Not to mention the fact that it didn’t smell like sweat for once. When I looked around to see who was here already, I spotted Ryder. I was right! He had about eight girls crowding around him and fawning all over him. It was disgusting! I knew he was going to have a bunch of dates. I spent the first part of the dance sitting on the bleachers eating some snacks and drinking some pop. One guy asked me to dance but he was really sweaty and disgusting so I danced with him for one song and then sat back down. I danced to some of the fast songs with some of the girls. When I was just about to fall asleep in my seat, Ryder came up to me and told me to meet him on the football field.
