4th of November, one week till the auction
Even though it was only eight in the afternoon, night had already fallen outside the empty :re. The lights were flashing inside the coffee shop, making the difference in the dark. There were no customers today and Yasuko was sweeping the the tables, Yomo and Touka cleaning the cups. There was complete silence, only the clock ticking could be heard.
Yasuko stopped for a while and looked around her. It was surprisingly warm inside and she felt kind of dizzy.
"Can I go take a walk?" She asked the others, breaking the silence between them. "I need some fresh air."
"Later you take walks really often, are you sure you're ok?" Touka said.
"Yeah, I'm fine. As you know I prefer cold than warmth. I promise I'll be back soon."
Let's hope I'll be able to find something to eat.
Even though when Yasuko had joined :re and promised not to kill anyone to eat and instead eat from the bodies Yomo gathered, these past few days she had gone against the rules and killed as often as possible. The only reason she did that was because Ayato had informed her that it would help her with her training. Yasuko had objected in the beginning, but Ayato was so persistent she gave up.
Of course she would never tell anyone. Having secrets was something she never liked or was good at, but she had started doing it more often now. It was difficult for her, she felt terrible, but she had no other choice. Besides, after the auction, it would end.
"Ok, I'm leaving," she shouted and took her coat.
"Wait, why do you carry your mask with you?" Touka asked worried.
Yasuko put her hand in her pocket and balled her fist, holding the black, lace mask tightly. Why did Touka have to be so observative? Now she would have to make up another lie. But... what if she told the truth in a twisted way?
"Just in case," she replied, trying to sound convincing, and shrugged. She waved at Touka and Yomo and went out.
Touka returned to the bar and took a cup, saying nothing at all and stared down at the floor.
"You've worried about her, aren't you?" Yomo asked.
"I'm just not that sure that everything is ok as she claims..."
"Hey, she's going to be fine," Yomo said and put his hand on her shoulder to confront her. "And if you still suspect anything weird, we'll have an eye on her."
"Thanks." Touka faked a smile and kept sweeping the cups.
*****
Yasuko had been walking for almost an hour and she still hadn't found any possible victim. She wasn't surprised though, it was dark, freezing cold and ghouls were wondering this late at night so everyone was scared.
But then, she heard footsteps coming from a side road. She took out the mask from her pocket and put it on. She hadn't worn it for years and she had forgotten how it felt. The last time she had worn it was that day two years ago, on the special night of the Owl extermination. The day her parents had died, the day she had been given a second chance by the last person she every thought she would. A CCG investigator...
She approached her target slowly, narrowing her eyes to see clearly. The human she had found was a short, middle-aged man who had just left his house. She looked straight at his hand, trying to see if there was a ring. She avoided killing people who had families.
