Beep...Beep...Beep...Beep... My eyes fluttered open. White greeted me. I sat up, feeling sluggish. This wasn't my room. Oh... that's right. The world became slow and chaos ensued. At least that's how it felt like. Then Merida stuck me with needle. I felt an itchy sensation on my right arm. An IV tube led from my arm to a bag of fluid. To keep me from dehydrating... I guess they didn't want to take any chances.I thought about the day's events that led up until now. The whole you'll learn everything step-by-step deal didn't seem to match this fast-paced world. It's time for some answers. Knock knock!
I snapped my attention to the door as it opened. Merida peeked from behind, relief flooding her face when she saw that I was awake. What perfect timing.
"Hey, Sweetie. How are you feeling?" she sat down on the bed. I shrugged.
"I feel fine, more or less." Merida chuckled.
"My, my. You've been such a problem child and it hasn't been a full day." She shook her head and sighed. That stung a little. What was she expecting from a girl that was technically one day old?
"Well I certainly haven't been meaning to be one." I commented dryly.
"Oh, Sweetie I know that." Merida let out another breath. "I was just hoping that day one would have gone a lot more smoothly for you. Well, at least today wasn't as bad as some of the other's first days."
Answer time.
"Well, I guess everything about me isn't as bad as the others. Awakening only two years early, being able to cope with this psychotic world better than most." Merida bit her lip, as if she hadn't expected me to have put that much together already. "My Companion said that a power had awakened inside me... Do you know what that means?"
She looked like I had punched her in the gut. Her face had fallen in an instant. She shifted uncomfortably. Her response was barely audible. I could barely make out what she was saying.
"As an appointed one, you will develop powers overtime to aid you in your purpose for life. Everyone is different, and your purpose may be ever changing." Merida's voice rose back to a normal volume.
"Many people fear appointed ones. Especially now. Governments and high officials are some of those people. Appointed ones have never been so abundant in numbers before. They have tremendous powers, and as I stated before, they all have a purpose. Now this is going to sound cheesy, but it's true. Most appointed ones are charged with the task of getting rid of some form of evil. For example, your purpose may be to free a nation from a dictator or to free slaves from a third world country.
"Often times, appointed ones will have the same purpose. At least for a while anyways." Merida cleared her throat before continuing. "What I mean by that is someone may have this humongous purpose that is supported by others that have smaller purposes." Her voice dropped in volume again. "And sometimes those 'smaller purposes'... those people... Their purpose is to die."
I sat in stunned silence. I had listened patiently in silence, glad I was finally getting some answers... But they were not what I was expecting. To top it off, this was only a little bit of what they had to tell me, but it felt like a lot. I now know why they wanted to break things to be slowly. Even though this is a world that moves quickly, and as I have learned, ruthlessly.
But, she still didn't answer your question did she?
"No," I thought grimly. "She didn't." I inhaled deeply before letting out the air. Merida looked at me worriedly, as if she expected me to lose it. "Merida," She tensed. "You still haven't answered my question." Merida tilted her head back and pinched the bridge of her nose.
"Remind me," she whispered softly. "What was your question?" Though in my mind, I was only a day old and had a lot of things to learn, I knew how to deduct reasonable conclusions. And the conclusion I'm coming to, based on what Merida has said... I don't like it. Thus is the price of basically having a program in my head that tells me things I already know, but have yet to know.
"What does this mean? What does one of my powers awakening mean?"
"It means that you already have a purpose. And that purpose is very near."
