I sat there in shock. I already had a purpose, and I had just awakened not even 24 hours ago. "I already have a purpose." I restated. Merida gave me a small nod. "OK, OK..." I didn't know what to do. What was I supposed to? I fumbled with the tape that held the IV tube in place.
"What are you doing?" I ignored her as I yanked the IV out. "Iris!" Merida grabbed my arm with a pleading look in her eyes. I smacked her arm away as I got up from the bed. "Where are you going? You're not being sensible! I know it's a lot to take in but please be rational! Sit down!" I was already at the door. I turned to look back at her for a second, then shut the door behind me.
I didn't know where I was going. I didn't even know where I was. I just needed to get out of that room. I went down the hall looking at signs for clues of where I was.
Go left.
Ah. Companion to the rescue. I turned left down the corridor. I recognized the hall, and even better, the door to my room. I quickened my pace, needing to be somewhere familiar. I tried the door handle. It was locked! Why was the door to my room locked?
That way no one can just barge in.
"How come the others were able to come in the last few times?"
Because, you let them. This room is yours, hardwired to your voice, your retinals and palm print. The room recognized your voice allowing them in. Now Josiah and Merida don't have to be allowed in as they are the higher authority.
"Well, how do I get in then?"
To enter, you must simply command it to. Or have your eyeball or hand scanned.
"Interesting..."
"Door open." I heard a click and tried the handle again. This time it opened. Cool. I opened the door and stepped inside.
Well that was rather drab. Make up a password later that's more fun and exciting.
"Yeah, I think I'll stick to the basics for now."
Once I was in, I locked it. I leaned against the door heavily as I slid down. I stared at the wall, finding comfort in it's white blankness.
I wonder why Merida didn't stop me when I left. She had the chance to. Instead she just let me go. I suppose there are some things I need to work out for myself, huh?
Indeed.
I thumbed the tattoo on my shoulder. This little black mark. It didn't seem to have a purpose other than to set me aside from others. I suppose it helps the fact that there are dozens of others like me. In a way, it makes me feel less lonely.
Hmm... Lonely. Have I felt this way the entire time?
Maybe.
"I suppose I couldn't be lonely since you're there 24/7, yet I am."
I felt Companion smile sadly.
Life is a mysterious thing isn't it?
"Yeah..."
I glanced over at the clock that was sitting on my bedside table. Tried to anyway, the wall was obscuring my view. I let out a breath and got up. 17:59 read my clock. It hadn't been out too long then. About 4 hours.
It's been about 6 hours since you last ate.
As if on cue my stomach growled.
"If I recall correctly, humans eat 3 times a day. Third meal is called... Dinner. Huh. Well, lets go see what dinner tastes like."
It will mean facing Merida and Josiah.
I was silent for a few moments.
"Avoiding them won't get me answers. It won't solve anything either. Perhaps after dinner, I'll get to meet everyone. Let's go face the music."
