Carson's POV

A few weeks had gone by slowly, with friends getting me into trouble as usual, teachers annoying me and tons of homework. The one thing that was unusual was that I hadn't been beaten up as badly as usual by my father. Yes, occasionally he'd throw something at me, but never hit me or hurt me as much as he used to. Most of my cuts and bruises had healed; I was actually starting to look good again.

I guess my who is kicking back in as well, huh?

I walked out of Maths class. It was quite boring as usual, but I'm surprisingly good at Maths. I shrugged at the thought and walked into the busy corridor. It was crowded, but could make out the familiar faces I knew from the cafeteria or class. "Hey dude," Adam said, leaning his elbow on my shoulder. "How's things?" he asked. He smirked. "Things are good, man. And you?" I asked him.

He smirked. "Things are really good. Lauren is amazing." he said. I chuckled and crossed my arms. "I'm glad to see you're happy." I said. He laughed. "Dude, we need to get you a girlfriend." he said. I sighed and stuffed my hands into my pockets. "I already told you, I don't date." I said. He groaned. "Come on, dude, that's so boring! You need a girl," he said and nudged me in the ribs. I shook my head. "Girls aren't everything, Adam, not to me." I said.

He sighed. "Fine." he said. It went silent for a while, until Adam spoke up again. "Hey, have you thought about helping me out tomorrow night?" he asked. Oh, I was hoping he'd forget about that. "Uh, actually I have something else on, I can't make it." I said as we turned the corner, walking toward English class. Adam groaned.

"Carson, that's what you've been saying ever since you're mother died, what happened to you, you've changed?" he asked me. At his words, I stopped walking. I looked ahead as images of my mother's bloody figure before me and her cries echoeing in my ears. I clenched my jaw then looked to Adam. "I have changed, okay? I've changed and there's no way I'm going back." I said frustrated and walked into Mrs Bernstein's classroom, actually on time this time.

"Good afternoon, Mr Henderson." she said to me as I passed her desk. "Morning," I said in a monotone and walked to my desk. I dropped into my seat and saw Adam walk into class. He sat next to Ethan, who was sitting next to me. They must have switched seats. Thanks goodness. There was dead silence between is three, until Ethan said something. "I did it," he said. I looked at him, confused.

"What do you mean, what did you do?" I asked. He turned to me and gave me a look, as if it was completely obvious. I looked at him a little longer, before I figured it out. "You didn't?" I asked, shocked. He wasn't that type of guy. "Oh, he finally did it!" Adam exclaimed and wrapped his arm around Ethan's shoulder. "Welcome to the club, was it with Jessica?" he asked him. I cringed at this. The club? Ethan blushed. "Yes, it was." he said.

I looked away and blocked out their conversation. I thought about what Ethan and Adam had done. In this generation, you are basically awesome if you've done it – which completely rubbish in my eyes. But was it worth it? I was a virgin, which would have been seen as bad if my friends knew, especially if you're popular. All of my friends think I did it with the only girlfriend I've ever had, Rebecca Dimarco.

Yes, I lied.

I ended it with Rebecca when she hooked up with another guy at a party we went to, everyone thought it was me because I was nowhere to be seen either. That was the party the week before my mother died. I was a party animal, but now I just avoided them. Mrs Bernstein was reading Romeo and Juliet again. I was bored out of my mind.
