The next few days were silent and boring as I waited to hear about Erica and for my neck to heal. I haven't been able to move my upper body without giving myself a massive headache. It's annoying.
"She's doing alright, starting to remember some people and events. She remembers you, well, as much as she can. The only thing I'm not sure about is if she remembers anything about Travis, especially that he's abusive." I listened to Ross talk about Erica as I stared at the wall across from me. I sighed and dragged my eyes slowly to focus on Ross who stared sadly at me.
"Physically, what's her condition?" I asked with a raspy voice and watched him look away, breaking eye contact.
"She, uh, she's stable. A couple broken bones, fractured wrists and an ankle, hundreds of cuts on her skin from the shattered glass, and the possibility of..." Ross trailed off, something he didn't want me to know.
"Possibility of what Ross?" I had barely enough energy to get the words out.
"The, uh, possibility of, um, going blind." His voice was quiet and nervous. As he spoke he looked at me without breaking eye contact he nodded in the silence that followed.
"What have I done?" I managed a sharp breath before staring back at the white wall.
"Max this isn't your fault." His voice was strong.
I didn't answer.
"Max please, don't do this again. You need to talk, remember."
I still didn't answer.
"Max god damn it, say something!"
I sighed. And looked at him slowly feeling tears well up in my eyes, for the first time in a long time I was going to cry.
"Max, listen to me," he paused and I nodded, "it's not your fault no matter what you say. Whatever happens now is up to you two to figure out, especially about your feelings." I nodded as much as I could, feeling a tear fall from my eye. He smiled taking a tissue and whipped it from my face laughing quietly.
"I could have done that." I said sniffling a little bit and adjusted myself.
"No you couldn't have, Max, you're broken." He laughed and I also tried to laugh but winced in pain.
"Okay, okay Max, don't hurt yourself. We're trying to get you better." He said seriously and I smiled.
"How's the offices holding up with our absence?" I asked observing Ross's reaction. He smiled and then cleared his throat not looking up until he had a straight face.
"It's hard without you two." He nodded and avoided my eye contact.
"Really?" I asked and watched as he started laughing, smiling a little bit myself.
"No, we've been messing around too much. We split your guys' work 4 ways so it's not like it's too much work. But don't worry, it's all under control according to Em." He nodded and jumped a little bit as his phone went off.
"Speaking of Em, she wants Red and I back at the office." I nodded shifting again.
"I'll see you later, Ross." I said hesitantly.
"I'll be back after work with Adam and Tim. Don't hurt yourself more, please, we need you back home. And Erica needs you too." He said standing up and walking towards the door.
"Thanks buddy." I said watching him leave before drifting off to sleep. I dreamt of the one date Erica and I had over a year ago, I could hear her laughter and her voice speaking softly and strongly. She used to say something I hadn't in years, 'i appreciate your existence' still hung in my ears.
"I appreciate your existence" I said aloud with a smile before falling asleep with a smile.
