It'd been when the bomb went off on the bridge that you'd got hit. You'd severely injured your side, you were high on all sorts of drugs to keep you asleep. Lexa visited every morning and night, before anyone was awake and after everyone was asleep. She held your hand, whispering apologies into your ear. In her mind, it was her fault you got hit. She was the one to introduce you to the warrior lifestyle, you were happy to be a maid but when you met her she'd convinced you to become a warrior instead; she could sense you're fighting spirit.
And now you were lying on your death bed, close to, well, death.
So tonight, when darkness fell and Lexa was able to sneak into your room undetected, she sat on the edge of your bed and clutched your hand, seeming much more upset than usual. "It's all my fault," she whispers, letting go of her tough persona. "You need to wake up because I can't do this without you."
Her hand squeezes yours, her eyes closed tight in a silent prayer. "You're my best friend, come on, you're stronger than this, Y/N."
It's a few minutes later when she gets up to leave, tucking a piece of hair behind your hair as she stands up and walks to the door. She stops at the doorway, turning to your sleeping figure and whispering the words she so badly wants to say to you, "I think I'm in love with you and I'm terrified."
And for the first time since she was a child, she sounds absolutely petrified.
-
The next morning, when she comes to see you again, she's horrified to se two guards standing outside your door. She doesn't bother trying to get past them, instead she walks past, only taking a glance inside your room. One of the clan healers stands over you, administering some kind of medicine Lexa isn't familiar with. She stops for a moment, her breath hitching, but when the guards give her a look she starts moving again. That was the first visit she missed.
-
The same night she returned, making sure there were no guards so as to make an easy entrance. When she turns into your room she's shocked to find it empty.
She stumbles over to the bed, almost falling onto it as she trips over her own feet. You can't be dead. No, it's not a possibility. You're too strong for that. Aren't you?
Lexa sits for what feels like hours, staring at the ground. All she can think of is that she may never see your smile again.
"Hey, have you seen the... Oh."
Lexa looks up, hoping to see you, and sees one of the clan healers instead. She stands, staring at the man blankly before asking, "Y/N, is she alive?"
He looks somber for a moment before answering, "No. She died this morning."
Lexa closes her eyes for a moment, she feels her heart shatter into millions. She nods slowly, rushing out of the room and back to her own. You're dead. How can you be dead? Only last night you were looking so much better.
Lexa wipes away a stray tear that falls from her eyes.
You were gone and for once Lexa couldn't do anything to help her pain.
