"Did you know that an immortality iris reblooms? Every time that it withers it will eventually bloom again." Cas remarked offhand as he flipped a few more pages in his new gardening book. "And did you also know that-"

"Probably not." Dean muttered with an eye roll. "I know shit about flowers, Cas, so I ain't gonna know anything you're talking about. Why're you so obsessed with those things anyway?"

Shutting his book softly, the fallen angel ran his fingers along the image of a white rose that was on the cover. After a deep sigh he parted his lips to explain as best he could. "Flowers are a reminder to me of what I lost. I used to sit in a garden in heaven. I can remember wondering what they smelt like, why someone planted them there, and how they could mean so much when they are nothing but decomposing organic matter.

"Do you remember what you gave me the first day you asked me out?"

Redness flushed the hunter's cheeks as he nodded with a faint smile of nostalgia. "A blue rose."

Castiel nodded, a smile starting to peak from his tired eyes. "I could smell that rose. I could feel the velvety petals between the pads of my fingers. I could imagine a million reasons why I would want to see it every single day. I finally understood. I wasn't an angel anymore, I was a man. And I knew why flowers were so beautiful.

"I want to build a garden."

Dean raised an eyebrow at his boyfriend. "Oh yeah?"

"Yes." Cas grinned down at his book. "I want roses and tulips and hydrangeas and-"

"Woah there." Pulling the Impala into the driveway of their recently bought home, Dean shut off the engine before giving his angel a wide smile. "It's a good thing we have a big backyard."

"Yes, it is." With the book grasped tightly between white knuckles, Cas leaned over to press a kiss against Dean's lips. "It will be my new heaven... my new beginning."

Dean set his hand over Cas' and eyed over the way their hands looked silhouetted by the other's. "I love you."

"I love you, too."

QUITE SOME TIME AND HARD WORK LATER

"It looks pretty damn good." Dean wiped at the dirt coated under his nails.

Cas, eyes wide with awe, gazed over the numerous spread of flowers now rooted into their yard. The contrasting bursts of colors seemed to settle a deep turmoil in his mortal mind. With a warm smile he reached down and linked fingers with his husband.

"And it only took fucking six months." Dean added with an exhausted huff. But his irritation quickly dissolved when he happened to glance over and see his husband completely melt at the sight of the garden they created together with their bare hands. "You good, sweetheart?"

"I can honestly say that I have never been better." Cas whispered as he looked away from his heaven and into the eyes of the truest happiness he ever had to call his own.
