"My baby....." She began speaking, teary-eyed, "beat the cancer?"
"Yes ma'am," I smiled.
She was still in disbelief. She didn't think that it could happen. Being in hospitals, they toss a bunch of numbers and chances at you. No matter how optimistic, you end up losing a little hope. I don't blame them. A sick kid is financially, emotionally, mentally, and physically draining. Josi's mom didn't have a very volunteering husband either. She was basically by herself.
"She can come home? And-and be a kid?"
"I don't Josi will ever be a normal kid." I smirked.
"Thank you, for all your help Beyonce. You have honestly help me through all this. I appreciate it." She grabbed my hand.
"See a need, fill a need." I quoted the old saying.
"When can she come home?"
"I wanted the kids to be able to say goodbye. They're kind of her family." I reasoned.
"Of course. You have my number, we can schedule a time. For now, I have to go. I'll be back, though."
"Okay."
We hugged and waved to each other. Josi's mom was caring, but she also had to pack work on heavy so she could pay for everything. I went for Josi's room to see how she was adjusting to all of this. I pushed the button and the doors opened. Hann was standing there with his hands in his pockets. I stepped in and nodded my head and smiled as a greeting. He smiled back. We stood in silence for a while, sneaking glances at each other.
"Um, Beyonce, do you remember that kid Ramone?" He spoke nervously.
"Yes, we caught his liver cancer, early." I remember reading his charts.
"Well, his tumor is benign. We were going to remove it today. Would you, uh, like to scrub in?"
"I-I can scrub in? Is that okay?" At this point, we were both nervous.
"Only if you want to-.."
"Sure! I mean...okay." I tried to lower my enthusiasm.
"See you in the OR at 4." The elevator beeped and the doors opened.
"Okay." I said as he stepped out.
I was kind of nervous because now I wanted to study. I had never seen a tumor in person before. Lately, I've been studying the heart. The liver is a whole different organ. The elevator stopped at the fifth floor and I went for Josi's room. I popped my head in and she was doodling on a piece of paper.
"Pssssst." I whispered.
"BB! Come here, silly!" She put her little arms out.
"How are you?" I squeezed her.
"I'm getting out of hereeee." She sang, doing a nice falsetto on the here.
"So I take it you're excited?"
"My mom says my room is lavender and I have a new bed. I have a big tv. My door doesn't squeak anymore. I also get to see my old toys again. My mother says I can go to regular school!" She rambled on and on about how different her life would be. I almost teared up. One of my bees was really leaving the hive.
"You won't forget me, will you?" I broke her out of her long speech.
"Of course not!" She looked at me with sympathy in her eyes.
"You better visit all of us."
"Mhmm. Mercy said she was going to take her cupcake back if I didn't speak once in a while." She pointed to the cupcake on the table.
