Chapter 6

The Bee Keeper

I was talking to Jaheem as I walked to the hospital.
"Ms. Peach Cupcake?" I accidently told him about my embarassing childhood.
"Yes! I was a pageant kid. Cupcakes were the older kids and the cookies were the toddlers." I explained.
"What was your talent?"
"I sung Imagine by John Lennon."
"Awww." He cooed.
"Shut up." I entered and waved to the nurses.
"You're going to sing to me one day."
"I am?"
"Yup. Tonight. I'm coming over."
"Whatever. I'll talk to you later. Bye."
"Bye beautiful."
We hung up and I went to the main desk for today's charts.
"Hey girl." Joan beamed.
"Someone's happy. Is Hann here?" I eyed her glow.
"Yes. He's actually angrier today, but I don't care." She twirled her hair.
"Um. Are you-."
"No! I uh-just had fun last night. Mmmm." She bit her lip.
"Thats my cue...." I walked away.
I flipped through the charts and stopped when I noticed that Josi was getting better. She was doing so good that I think she might be discharged soon. I didn't know whether to cry or jump for joy. One of my bees was leaving the hive. I wonder how Daniel would take all of this. They were really building a bond. It looks like I was right about the little boy, Ramone. I wonder what he would be like.
"Hey." Corey bumped me.
"I don't like you." I tried to brush pass him.
"Awww. C'mon. I was just giving you what you gave me." He smirked.
"I can't even get you back." I pouted.
"Why?" I never did tell him about Jaheem. I thought it would be a one time thing.
"I'm dating...I think."
"Oh wow. I wasn't expecting that." He seemed disappointed.
"I had a great way to get you back, too. Ugh." I took his coffee and headed for Josi's room.
"Oh, and give these to Hann." I paused and gave him the charts.
Everything was pretty normal. It was weird. I was still really sleepy from staying up all night talking to Jaheem. He had practice and I had work, but we both just talked. I was walking and sipping when I eyed Hann. Nope. Not this early in the morning. I immediately did a 180 on my heels and made a B-line for the stairs, tossing the coffee in the trash.
"Beyonce!" He called.
By then, I was on the stairs. I ran up the steps to a different level. I heard someone on the stairs also so I moved even quicker. I finally stopped when I felt my lungs about to collapse.
"You could breathe if you'd stop running from me." I heard from behind me.
Uhh. I should go to the gym.
"You don't have to talk to me, really." I pushed him away.
"Listen to me." He grabbed both my arms and squeezed them.
"Let go!" I fought back.
"Listen!" He held on tighter.
"No!" I kicked him in the leg and ran.
That was childish, but I don't like being held down. I probably just ruined my chances at the intern program here, too. Great. I caught my breath and opened a door. I was on the 3rd floor. The kids room are on the 5th. Today isn't a great day. I took the elevator and fixed my hair. I was still really sweaty. The doors opened and nurses entered. They all gave me a weird look.
"You okay?" Corey asked.
"Fine. Today's been...eh."
"Wanna go to an on-call room?" He eyed me.
"Boy bye." I stepped off the elevator.
"Let me know if you change your mind!" He hollered.
He needs to go to that on-call room and go to bed, lay his head down. I finally arrived to Josi's room.
"Hey Jos!" I practically sang.
"Heyyy B." She actually sang.
"You should go on Disney channel or somethin' when you get out of here." I sat on her bed.
"Wait. I'm getting better?!" Her eyes lit up.
"Yep. I'll talk to your mom and tell her the good news." I smiled.
"BB!" She hugged me tight.
"Are you excited?"
"Yes, but...." Her eyes wandered off.
"You're going to miss Daniel and the friends you've made here." I guessed.
"Yes! I'll miss all of them, especially Daniel and Mercy."
Mercy was a little girl named Mercia. She LOVED cake. It was her most favorite thing about living. She told her mom that if she could never eat cake again, to unplug her right now(bold. I know). I knew Daniel was going to miss her too. I would head down to his room after this.
"Well, you can always visit." I stroked her hair.
"I could! Would you still talk to me when I feel bad?" She fiddled with her hands and her voice got lower.
"Of course."
She smiled and hugged me again. Then, Joan popped in, "B!"
"Yes?" I looked at her.
"Where's Ramone's charts?"
"I was going to give them to you this morning, but I was....busy. They should still be on the main desk or with Hann." I forgot all about his charts.
"Ugh. Hann." She rolled her eyes and left the doorway.
"You guys don't like the doctor very much do yall?" Josi caught on to our annoyance.
"He's not too nice." I got up from her bed.
"I'll tell him to be nice!"
"You do that." I laughed.

[Down in radiology]

"Um, Knowles, do you know where Hann is?" The head of neuro popped in.
"Sorry. No." I shook my head.
I was so relieved to not have seen him. I feel like I spoke too soon because he entered the room below the glass. I didn't want him to look up and see me so I hid under the desk. I prayed he would just leave. After a while, I peeked to see if he was still there. I slowly rose from the desk.
"Who ya hidin from?" Corey scared the piss out of me.
"Corey!" My heart was still racing.
"I know you're not hiding from me. You scared of the D?" He joked.
"Boy you really need some sleep. Cockiness must be one of the effects of your sleep deprivation." I waved him off.
"Is he bigger than me?" He said really nonchalant.
"Go to bed.....you didn't even let me see first." I mumbled the last part.
"What was that?"
"Nothing." I walked out.

Hann POV

Where did she go? I checked almost all the kids rooms. Someone told me she would be in radiology. I saw the doctors, but no Beyonce. I tapped the nurse, Corey, to ask where she was.
"Hey. Have you seen Beyonce?"
"Kelendria's room, I think." He smirked.
"Thanks man."
He laughed and walked away. I didn't get what was funny. I went to Kel's room to find her. I honestly don't know why I said those things. She's never said anything rude to me or even been rude. Something about her presence made me feel different....not myself. I wanted to atleast apologize. She doesn't have to like me, but I wish she'd hear me out. I arrived at her room and she was sitting there laughing at the edge of Kelendria's bed. Her hair laid perfectly down her shoulders. She had one dimple that complimented her pretty smile. I was just kind of in awe.
"Dr. Hann!" Andy called
"Hey there, Andy." I smiled warmly.
"Um, kids, I'll see you later. I have to go do something." She lifted to her feet.
"Don't go BB!" Kel pleaded.
"By all means, Ms. Knowles, please stay with the children. I just would like to speak to you later if thats alright." I said as nice as possible.
"Fine." She sat back down.
She started explaining what the female cycle is and thats when I knew I had to go. I would just wait outside. In the mean time, I had to check on my interns. Joan was efficient, but a little promiscuous. I didn't care as long as it didn't affect her work. I saw her coming from Dermatology.
"Hello, Joan. What were you doing in Dermatology?"
"Just checking on something for one of my patients, sir." She responded.
"Okay. Have you found Ramone's charts?"
"Not yet, sir."
I frowned at that. "Could you find them immediately please?"
"Yes sir." She rushed off.
I saw her talking to Beyonce after. Apparently, she had them. I started walking towards them.
"Here's the charts. I forgot I gave them to Corey. I got them back, though." Beyonce handed them to me and tried to walk off.
"Wait. I needed to talk to you." I stood in her way.

Beyonce POV

I let out a sigh. Why couldn't this day just be over already? I stood waiting for him to speak.
"I am genuinely sorry for being rude to you. I know you don't want to hear this after the effect, but I atleast wanted to tell you." He started.
"Its water under the bridge now. I don't care really. I see who you are, and I believe you." I honestly didn't care. He wasn't the first one to question the fact that I had beauty and brains.
"Honestly, Beyonce-."
"Its fine. I'm serious." I put my hand up. "Did you need anything?"
"No, but its not because I think-.."
I cut him off again. "I got it."
I smiled and walked away. My mother always taught me to be atleast corigual.

[Later at my house]

I was trying to make sugar cookies, but I was failing miserably. I decided to make my signature Strawberry shortcake instead. I always liked sweets after work. It always relieved my stress. I was mindful of my intake, though. I threw the cookies in the trash and took the strawberry's out the frig. I heard a knock at the door and went to get it. Jaheem getting my address was starting to be beneficial. I hate to give directions.
"Hey." I let him in.
"Hey. I smell sweets." He took off his jacket.
"You do." I brought him a brownie, I also made.
"Mmm." He let it melt in his mouth.
"Mmm, is right." I nodded in approval. I noticed that he still smelled like sweat and grass.
"Did you just come from practice?" I turned my nose up.
"Yes, not all of us work at a hospital." He destroyed the brownie.
"I'm aware...its just that...."
"I stink?"
I'm glad he knew....
"Yeah...." I nodded.
"Can I take a shower?"
"Where would you get clothes?"
"My driver could bring my bag up." He's so rich and hollywood.
"Uhh. Okay." I didn't know what else to say.
"Wanna join me?" He smirked.
"I knew there was a reason." I walked to the kitchen.
"Of course." He came behind me and wrapped his hands around my waist.
"You really should take a shower."
"Fine. But first..." He turned me around and kissed me.
I pulled away. "Shower."
"Sing." He folded his arms.
"What?"
"You heard me, sing."
"Jah-.."
"I'm not getting into the shower till you sing."
"Guess you'll be a stinky boy." I went to the living room.
"Beyyy." He picked me up.
"Let me gooo." I whined.
"Singggg."
"Fine! Put me down!"
He gently put me on the floor. I started to sing Ex Factor by Lauren Hill. I really didn't care how I sounded. I hadn't sung in I don't know how long. I know I was rusty. I finished and waited for his reaction.
"You're amazingg." He squeezed me.
"You still stinkkkk." I frowned.
"Sing to me while I'm in the shower?"
"Don't push it." I laughed.
