The Bad in Goodbye

It had been a week since Josi left. Honestly, I missed her, but she would call me on her mom's phone whenever she wanted to talk. It was all bittersweet. I wasn't going to see her in one of those tiny coffins, but I also wasn't going to see her grow up. I guess I could focus more on the kids that are still here. They still need help and support. My "volunteering" is also coming to an end. I will have to be an actual doctor soon. I hope the initiation into Dr. Knowles is smooth. Today I was on the head of cardio's service. Why? I don't know. The lady over me, instructed me to do so. The only attendings I knew were the ones operating on the kids. Of course we need heart surgeons, but usually I speak to a resident. They said she was nice, but strict. I don't know how to take that. Her interns were a mess so I ended up doing her post-opts. It makes sense though; the intern exam is coming up. Its crunch time. I finished rounds and went to search for this lady. I was a little anxious. I never really had my hand in cardio before. It came to me, how do you find a person that you have never met and don't know their name? I turned on my heels to find Hann. Thankfully he was standing at the candy machine, waiting for his chocolate.

"Morning Dr. Hann." I beamed.

"Morning Dr. Knowles. How are you?" He bent down to get his 3 Musketeers.

"I'm good. Have you seen the head of cardio?"

"Dr. Ross? Uh, she might be in urgent care. It tends to be a lot of heart attacks down there lately." That last phrase made me a little uneasy. I had an aunt that died of a heart attack.

"Um. May I ask what she looks like?"

He laughed lightly. "I thought you were going into Pieds."

"I am! I just have to be 'well-rounded'"

"She's tall, red hair, long, um, wears lions on her scrub cap."

"Lions?" I raised my eyebrow.

"Don't judge someone you haven't met." He joked. "You shouldn't miss her."

"Thanks Hann." I turned away.

I'm so glad he's not rude anymore. I can actually have a conversation with him. I went downstairs and scanned the room for this woman. I mostly saw tired people, waiting for updates on their loved ones. I finally stopped when I saw a lady writing away on her charts. I walked over to get a better glimpse at her name tag.

"May I help you?" She looked up. She shocked me.

"Oh-uh. I was just wondering if you were the head of Cardio." I stammered.

"Yes. I'm Dr. Ross. Who might you be?" She went back to her charts.

"Oh. I'm Beyonce. I-.."

"Wait. Are you the one who did my post-opts?" She twisted her eyebrows.

I nodded my head, scared of her rebuttal.

"Wow. I like you better than my interns. You actually write legibilly." She spoke nonchalantly.

"Thank you Dr. Ross. I'm on your service today. May I ask what else I may assist you with?" I tried to sound as professionally innocent as possible.

"Get me a coffee from the cafe across the street, a lot of sugar and cream." She ordered.

"You are aware there is coffee in the cafeteria, correct?"

"Yes, but I like the cafe's better. Bye now." She walked away.

Do all the attendings start off rude?

I was mixing her coffee when my phone buzzed.

"Hello?" I said without even checking to see who it was.
