During the third month of my wife's pregnancy I drove her to the clinic for her monthly checkup. The doctor was a trusted friend of ours, Dr Patricia Smith.
I stood by my wife's side as the jelly like substance was smeared across her stomach.
"Yikes, it's freezing," said Ashley.
"Yes, but after a while you won't even realize it." The good doctor smiled and fixed her wire frame glasses.
Dr Smith then placed the instrument on my wife's stomach and an image came up on the small monitor."Well here we are," the doctor started pointing at the screen with a long transparent tube. "Twelve and a half weeks along and you're baby organs have formed out. Now this is a very crucial time as the cartilage is beginning to form and the mother should intake plenty of calcium to provide for the baby."
I noticed the Doctor stressed words as crucial, plenty and baby."The professionals have said that exercise is encouraged at this stage, but I personally wouldn't recommend it. The bones are just forming and we don't want to joust things up and cause any complications." Patricia continued. "I encourage it at six months onwards."
"Doctor can we get pictures of the ultra sound?" My wife asked.
We had made the decision to start a photo album capturing the moments of our little one. What better way to start off than with an ultrasound image.
I'll entitle it "Plight of the womb."
Patricia smiled and said, "Sure, do you also want the gender?"
I looked deep into my wife's eyes and Ashley bit her lip.
"Absolutely," I said hoping this was a mutual decision."Great choice, you'll know momentarily." The doctor pressed a button on the monitor and walked out of the room.
Vrrrr vrrrr.
The cellphone in my pocket was ringing, the caller ID flashed to reveal it was my partner."Hello?"
"Detective Anderson there's a situation at Calamari Beach, your presence is needed ASAP." Patrick expelled in the phone.
I heard the wails of sirens over the connection."Okay, I'll be there as soon as I can."
After we received the documents, I dropped off Ashley at the nursing school and made my way towards the beach.
I don't know what was more scary, what the gender of my child was or what was waiting for me at the beach.
