New Victim

I had driven the full eight miles down to Calamari Beach. This place was usually busy as many local residents along with a few tourists always occupied it.

The beach boasted seaside restaurants, underwater adventures, boat rides and even an amusement park. The afternoon air was cool and caused billows in my clothes as I strode.
A small crowd gathered at a restaurant and I took it as a clue to check it out. There a team of police officials and security members were standing, restraining individuals from accessing a doorway.

My partner appeared out of the blue and greeted me, notepad in hand.
"What we know is that the victim is a blond female, she lives in the vicinity. She went to the bathroom," Detective Sutherland pointed to the protected doorway. "But she never came out alive."

"How did she die?" I asked as my partner left that out completely.

"Er," Patrick scratched his head. "No clue."

My curiosity peaked. "I suppose she just fell over right?" The sarcasm was evident.

"Yes! Wait, no." My partner seemed confused. "She was found laying on the ground, spread out like butter on toast. There are no clear source of death, no bullet wounds, no knives wounds, no sort of physical abuse."

"Let's go see the body," I said moving towards the bathroom.

"The body is already on the way to the morgue. Paramedics have already pronounced her dead so there's no need for her to go to the hospital." Detective Sutherland informed me.

"Detective, I fail to see the reason why we've been called down here."

"Well, Courtney, her husband is a great friend of the Chief and he wants the chief's top detectives on this case as he doesn't see how his wife can just kneel over and die." This was the first time Patrick was calling me by my first name.

"Kneel over and die huh? Let's go check out the scene of death, shall we?"

People don't just kneel over and die.

We proceeded to the crime scene which was now deserted. No one was nearby the vicinity. We went into a narrow walkway which led to two door, male and female.

We went in the female bathroom and a chalk outline of the victim's body was drawn.

"So tell me again detective, what happened here?"

"Nothing as far as we know. A female found her here collapsed and alerted the patrons of the restaurant." Patrick Sutherland skipped a page and continued.
"A pair of plainclothes had taken her statement and I quote, 'I saw her here when I came to use the restroom, she was blocking the door and I realized she was unconscious. I then ran back to the restaurant and shouted to the patrons that a woman was unconscious.' End quote."

"I need to speak to her, whoever she is. Also I want the tapes pulled from the cameras ASAP and I need the body at our lab as well." Patrick was scribbling like crazy.
I checked the door knob as I spoke, no use checking those for prints as people walk in and out here often.

"Anything else you want me to do Detective?" Patrick sounded irritated.

"Yes, we need to go speak to this hotshot who wanted us on the case."

"Wait," the new detective objected. "Who's going to look after these?" He pointed to the list he had made.

"Give it to a plainclothes, and tell them to make sure its done. After all that's what they get paid to do."
