Chapter Two

And I thought we were friends...

I woke up by the sound of my phone buzzing on my bedside table. Who would be texting me at midnight? I wondered. I picked up my phone and unlocked it. One new message it said. I opened the message to find a text from Ben. Go on Skype. So I did. As soon as I logged on, he sent me a video call request. I accepted.

          “Hey baby.” Wait what?

          “Um... hi.” I replied, confused.

“Wait, you are my baby, right?” He asked, batting his eyes like a six year old.

“What do you mean?” I asked him, trying to figure out what was going on. Did calling me his “Baby” mean we were going out, or he just really liked me?

“I mean, you’re my baby. And my Canadian Slave. Do you have any more awesome Canadian friends that can join my army?” He asked. The first person I thought of was my best friend for nine years, Maggie. Maggie is one of those people that can be crazy no matter what the situation.

“Yeah I think I have a few.” I told him. “I’m going to my friend’s house tomorrow; I’ll get her to join.” I said, still laughing at the idea of being his “Canadian Slave.”

“Awesome. Wait, hold on.” He said, and ended the call.

Gotta go, parents don’t know I’m on my laptop. I’ll talk to you tomorrow. And he logged off. Tomorrow would be a great day.

When I woke up that morning, all I could think about was what Ben called me. No, not his Canadian Slave, but his Baby. Could he really like me that way? Who knows? I was bound to find out sometime soon, or else my life would be like a never ending Nancy Drew book.

                                                                                   * * *

A few hours later, Maggie had called me and told me that I could come over, since her parents had to leave. And no, we weren’t having a party- I had to babysit her. Babysitting your best friend is always fun, you get to do whatever you would usually do at a sleepover, but you can stay up as late as you want and nobody cares.

Once I got there, we hit the candy stash, so we could pull an all-nighter. We had all the candy you could think of- Skittles, M&M’s, gummy bears, pop rocks, basically all her Halloween candy. Now we were ready to stay up all night, although our stomach’s hurt from all the candy, but we still didn’t care.

We spent the night making music videos, watching TV, and running around outside like lunatics, and when we finally came in, opened my laptop to edit the video we had filmed. But before we could even open the editing software we needed, Ben came online.

“Who’s Ben?” Maggie asked, staring at his profile picture. “He’s hot. He looks like Ryan.” Ryan was Maggie’s ex who she has broken up with because she thought he was cheating on her, even though he wasn’t. Maggie always brought Ryan into our conversations one way or another, and I was tired of it.

“Ben’s one of Lauren’s friends. And before you ask, Lauren is my friend from the States, and Ben lives there, too.” I said.

“Okay, cool. So let’s talk to him.” Maggie said. Things went downhill from there.

BRII: hey

Ben: wats up my canadian slave

Ben: :)

BRII: lol

BRII: wanna do video chat?

Ben: sure

BRII: k

Ben: okay if u want to u can call me "my fat american buddy"

Ben: omg maggie ur soo hot i would date u if i culd :)

BRII: hehe

Ben: hehehe luv u –maggie :)

Ben: bri, ur pretty hot too :)

That last message made me feel amazing. Nobody has ever called me that. Then I was sure he cared about me, until this happened...

Ben: omg maggie ilysm

Ben: tell maggie i said that

Ben: my canadian baby

BRII: i feel so included...

One of the biggest mistakes I made was letting Maggie and Ben talk. Ben instantly fell for Maggie, and Maggie had completed her task to steal Ben’s friendship from me. The next day, Maggie asked him out. Since Ben thought Maggie was hot, his answer was yes. I was devastated, but happy for them both, considering they were both my best friends. Ben really liked Maggie, but she only liked him because he looked like Ryan. Maggie wanted Ryan back, that’s the only reason she went out with Ben. And to make me jealous.

Those two weeks were painful. Ben would talk to me, but only to ask if I was talking to Maggie. He wouldn’t text me back, either. But would he text Maggie? Of course, they were dating. But they had only known each other for two days, and I knew him for six months. Then I knew I had to build up the nerve to tell Ben that I had feelings for him. I couldn’t hold it in any longer. Maggie found out at the same time, and was furious. Ben admitted that he liked me, but he liked Maggie more. Did that make me feel better? Yes and no.

Maggie and I stopped talking for a while, and then she broke up with Ben, because Ryan asked her out. Ben was really upset. He loved Maggie, and she dumped him for no reason. I was there for Ben when he needed me. I could tell by that on the look he had on his face he could trust me. He told me things he never told Maggie, and he told me how much he loved her.

A few weeks later, Ben had gotten over it, and hated Maggie, no more feelings between them. Ben and Maggie couldn’t stand each other anymore. Yes, I was happy that Ben was happy again, but Maggie still had feelings for Ben and she thought we were more than friends. But we weren’t. We promised to stay just friends well, until this summer. He was coming to visit me this summer. When I heard the news I was super excited and couldn’t wait. We didn’t tell anybody we were dating; we just said we were two friends in love. We now end our calls and texts with “bye luv you.”

I bet you saw a happy ending coming there. Think again. Things got way more complicated, and of course, we’re still two friends in love, but I think that’s coming apart. Let me tell you; living twenty four hours away from the one you love is hard, and dragging your friends into it makes you feel like you just got arrested for robbing a bank. Let me tell you more.
