Chapter Four
What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.
That night I couldn’t help but think about the friendship I had ruined. Eight years of friendship, gone, all because of some guy that we didn’t know. But for me, not knowing Ben face-to-face didn’t matter, as long as I had him in my life somehow, I was alright. But knowing what Maggie felt, and knowing that she would never forgive me, made me feel even worse, with the Emily thing on top. I felt like a criminal- no, worse than that. But being with Ben changed that feeling about Maggie for a while. I mean, of course I still felt bad for Emily, but for Maggie, I actually thought she deserved it, for taking Ben from me, and acting like a bitch around me when she was talking to Ben. So I decided to tell some of my friends what she had done, just to get it out to somebody. I told my friend Mandy all about it. Every single detail, from the first time Maggie met Ben, to the last time Ben and I had talked.
“Wow, Maggie sounds nice.” Mandy said sarcastically.
“Yeah I know. She’s just being like this for no apparent reason. So what if we both like the same guy? I’m sure one of her friends liked Ryan when she did.” I said, going through pictures on my computer.
“Hold on, stop there.” Mandy said, taking my hand away from the mouse pad. “He is hot!” She said. Of course, it was a picture of Ben. Well this would be interesting. You see, Mandy’s one of those people that get’s what she wants, whether it takes lying or not. “Who is it?” She asked, tracing his face with her finger.
“Um... That’s Ben...” I said quietly. No, I wasn’t going to have somebody else take him from me.
“Break up with him, I want him.” Ouch.
“No thanks, I’m good...” I said, getting my phone out of my pocket. I punched in Ben’s number and sent him a text saying this: Ben, my friend Mandy thinks you’re hot. Knowing her, she’s gonna ask for your number. Don’t let somebody take me away from you again. Okay?
He replied almost instantly, like he had been waiting for me to text him. K, I’ll make sure of it. Luv you. Okay, so he wasn’t going to let Mandy ruin our friendship, or ruin my life. Good.
Mandy did ask for his number, and I gave it to her. Mandy started flirting with Ben, and he had no idea what she looked like, and had no idea who she really was. She asked him out a couple of times, while we were still dating. Of course he answered ‘no’, and I was glad that he did. I knew Ben wasn’t a player, and I knew that he cared enough about me to not let anybody or anything come between us again.

“What’s she look like?” Ben asked that night. Mandy was supposed to be online by now, but she wasn’t. Ben and I had been waiting for a half hour now.
“Here, I’ll send you a picture.” I said, looking through my pictures on my computer, trying to find a picture. Once I found one, I opened the file and sent it to him.
“Well she’s... not the... prettiest... No, she won’t ruin it.” He laughed, and so did I. Then she signed on. I added her to the conversation.
“Hey, Mandy.” I said.
“Hey, wait, Ben’s here, right?” She asked. You could tell that she only wanted to talk to him.
“Yeah I’m here. What’s up baby?” He asked. Wait what did he call her? Hold on, I thought he said nothing would come between us again. I decided to ask him in private messages. Just kidding around, he said. Good. I didn’t want anything happening.
After a few hours of talking about random things, Mandy left, and it was just me and Ben. “Okay, Bri, yeah she’s not gonna ruin anything. To be honest, I don’t even think she’s gonna be my friend. She’s kind of annoying...”
“I know,” I said, Mandy could get annoying. “Just ignore her sometimes, don’t talk to her a lot, and you’re safe from annoyingness.” He laughed, and there was a pause.
“You know, I never realized how pretty you really were until I started dating you.” He said. My heart was beating faster; I couldn’t believe he just said that. My smile was as wide as my face, and I was pretty sure I was going to cry. Nobody had ever said something that nice to me.
“I love you so much.” I said, wishing that he was by my side right then and there.
“And I love you. But I have to go; I have to go to a haunted corn maze haunted house thing with some girl in fifteen minutes. But don’t worry, she asked me and I have no feelings for her. I’ll talk to you when I get home, okay?”
“Sounds good. Love you.” I said.
“Love you,” Ben replied, and he ended the call. This day was perfect. Or so I thought. Around an hour later, Maggie called me and asked how her friend Danika, who was also my friend, how she knew about the Ben thing. How I was supposed to keep it a secret, and how I was being mean. Yeah, because I’m the one being mean.
Hold on, I mean, I told enough people about it... But she deserved it, right? No. Nobody deserved to be treated like this. I told her I was sorry about one hundred times, but she still wouldn’t forgive me.
That saying, “What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.” Well it sure seemed to hurt Maggie, and I was caught in the middle of all of this Maggie-loves-Ben-but-I’m-dating-him drama.
Well this is going to be fun...
