Just friends.

“I have to tell you something,” Ben said as soon as I picked up my phone that night. I knew what he was going to say, and I didn’t want to hear it. “Okay, so we live like, twenty-four hours away, and long-distance relationships... Well I’m not so into them. So I’m not really breaking up with you... Just kinda putting this all on hold for a while, okay?” He finished. Trying to take in what he said, knowing he had tried not to hurt me, I replied simply, “Okay.” I mean, I knew this was bound to happen someday.

          “But we’re still gonna talk a lot, pretend I never said that, even though I did remember, we’re best friends in love.” He said, “Just not dating until later on in the summer.”

          “Okay, yeah I get it. But don’t start going out with Maggie or Mandy or any of my other friends, got it?” I said, sounding serious, but at the same time having a little fun tone in my voice.

          “Got it.” He said. Then there was some awkward silence. I was the one to break it.

          “Emily’s online... You know what that means, right?” I asked.

          He nodded, looking happy. “Skype ‘Till Two baby.” He said. I laughed and added her in.

Even though we broke up in some sort of way, what he had just said made me feel amazing, like he really did still have feelings for me.

That last one was a joke, you see, since Thanksgiving is one two completely different days in America and Canada, when we told Ben we had no school one day because of Thanksgiving, he was kind of amazed, yet freaked out in a way.

There was so much more to that night, but let’s just stop there, because I could go on forever about the most random things that we talked about.

That night when Ben left, Emily and I kept talking for a while. “You see, that’s why I love him. But you guys make like, the perfect couple.” I hadn’t told Emily about what had happened earlier.

          “Well, we’re not really a couple anymore, since we live so far away, we put our relationship on hold for a while, and when he comes down for the summer, we’re gonna start again I guess...” I said, trying to make it sound like we didn’t break up, because just the thought of that kind of broke my heart, even if we did break up in some weird way.

          “Okay I don’t think I’ve ever heard anybody else say that. Like, ever.” She laughed.

          “But you guys really do make the perfect couple. You’re so much alike, and I can just picture you guys this summer... You’ll be making out in the hot tub while I’m getting kicked off the kiddie slide.” Now that made me laugh.

          “No, we’re all gonna be getting kicked off that kiddie slide.” I said, and we laughed even more for a few minutes.

          “Crap, mom’s coming, not supposed to be on my laptop, I’ll text you tomorrow. Bye.” And she logged out.

          When she left, I checked my email’s quickly and turned my laptop off. Today had been an awesome day, and breaking up (sort of) could be good I guess. I mean I wouldn’t have to worry about Ben breaking up with me for real, and I wouldn’t have to make Maggie any madder at me. Then I thought about Maggie and how much I wanted to be her friend again, no matter how big of a bitch she was being, and I was going to forgive her for the mess that she made. But the bigger question: Was it going to be easy or hard?
