Chapter Three
Meet Emily.
Everybody has one of those friends that you can tell all your secrets to, be yourself with, and that person that you can always count on. For me that person is Emily. Emily and I have been friends for three years now, and we're closer then Maggie and I ever were. The day I introduced Emily to Ben was during our first "Skype 'Till Two" tradition, where everybody would stay up until two in the morning on Skype.
At first, Emily wouldn't talk to Ben without me there because she didn't know him well enough. They got along really well that night, and bonded fast. I mean what better way to get to know somebody then to talk to them for five hours straight? Bad example? Yeah, I know.
At first, all Emily saw Ben was as just a friend. Soon after she fell in love with him, and I had become Maggie, and she had become me. Not in the sense that Ben and I were dating, and no way was I acting like Maggie, but we would talk more than they did and I could tell that Emily felt left out.
"If you ever feel left out, just tell me. I know what it's like, I've been there before, and it's hard." I told her.
"But I don't wanna invade your guy's conversations or anything." She replied.
"But you won't be invading. If you feel left out at all or if there's anything you need or want to tell me, go ahead. I'm here for you." I said.
“Okay.” She replied. I knew that this was going to turn out bad, and I was right. Emily fell in love with Ben, just like I did, and she probably even loved him more than I did at some times. But I just feel so bad for dragging her into this, because I know exactly what it feels like to be in her place. And let me tell you, it’s a tough spot to get out of.
Maggie and Ben were still dating when Emily and Ben met, and when Maggie told me she was going to break up with Ben that night, I told Emily right away. We agreed not to tell him, knowing how he might feel.
Ben never did find out the real reason that Maggie broke up with him until I told him a few weeks later. Maggie said she broke up with him because they lived too far away. Lie. She broke up with him for Ryan, who turned out to have a girlfriend after. Maggie wanted Ben back. Was that going to happen? No. It was almost like I was the new Maggie now, but I didn’t act like her. Me and Ben had never been closer, and he barely knew Emily, making her the old Bri.
But even if I was taking Maggie’s place, when I saw this, I was surprised. Maggie thought me and Ben were going out, so she had posted this:
Maggie L :’(

It was obvious she wanted him back now. And was I going to feel bad for her? No, not after what she did. I showed Emily this, and she just laughed. Was Maggie really this desperate to get Ben back? I was thinking she was.
The next time I went to babysit Maggie, she went on talking about Ben, and Ben introduced her to his friend Luke. Luke was just like Ryan- personality wise. Luke and I didn’t get along at all and since Maggie and Ben didn’t get along anymore, I brought my laptop into her bedroom and talked to Ben, and Maggie would stay in the kitchen and talk to Luke.
That night Ben and I played the “question game”, which is like an extreme version of truth or dare. We asked the funniest questions ever, and were on Skype until two in the morning, but Maggie and Emily weren’t a part of this.
While playing the question game, he asked me out. I was speechless, especially since he said that he wouldn’t be dating anybody else through the internet. My answer was yes. Did I tell Maggie? No. Emily? Yes. Emily said she was happy for me, and that night, looking at iPhone wallpapers, I found one that said “It doesn’t help that you’re in love with my best friend”. I felt really bad for Emily. And I knew that she hurt more than I ever did.
The next morning, I called Ben when I got up, and we talked for hours at Maggie’s basketball practice.
“Who were you talking to that whole time?” Maggie asked, putting her jersey in her bag after practice.
“Oh, just Ben.” I told her truthfully. I could see the jealousy on her face.
“I know you like him, Bri, but I’ve never seen you guys talk or text so much. I know you guys are dating. Just tell me that you are.” She said. She had put her foot down; you could tell she had enough.
“So, you guys went out. What’s the big deal?” I asked, following her through the stadium to some seats while we waited for her parents to pick her up.
“You know I still liked him!” She exclaimed, anger now going through her face.
“Sorry, but I can’t help it if I love him.” I said, and waited outside.
The drive home was the longest thirty minutes of my life. Maggie and I didn’t talk the whole way, and her parents wouldn’t turn on any good music. I was texting Ben and telling him what had happened. He was telling me that she deserved it for being mean to him- and from taking him from me. Ben admitted then to liking me before I told him that I liked him as more than a friend. Did that make me smile? Yeah it did. So he had liked me this whole time, but neither of us had told one another. Imagine if I had told him earlier. We possible could’ve gone out. I was amazed by what he had told me. I mean- the guy I loved had liked me for six months? Now I really wished I had told him earlier.
