Horse Sight

89 21 8

We are Runners astray,
Lost between the hands of the clock,
With timekeeper maps
Showing the shortest way to our destination,
And countdowns for minds,
We rush to reach the finish line.

But countdowns are meagre
Against the forces of time.
And we know not what lies
Beyond the end line.
So why fail to explore the possibilities
Offered by the present ?
Why see with horse-sight?

Alas! We realise not the the power
Of memories,
During frail, solitary nights.
So we do what we know best;
We run until we feel the wind burning our eyes,
Breath caught in our throats,
Feel our knees wobble
And our steps falter,
Trying ceaselessly
To catch the hand ahead of us
And escape the one behind;
Until we can no longer carry the weight
Of wrinkles on our cracked skin

And fall.

Now just whispers of regretful sighs,
Our past and future blending seamlessly
At the horizon of obscuring twilight.
