~Drew's POV~
I came into class 10 minutes late the next day. My math teacher, Mrs. Weldin, was really pissed at me and told me I had detention as soon as I walked through the door. She didn't even have to look at me. She knew I was late...again. I took my seat. As soon as she turned around, my buddy Aaron, who was sitting beside me, leaned to the side to talk.
''Hey, Jobin said you were with a girl last night,'' Aaron whispered so the teacher wouldn't hear. Then he wiggled his eyebrows and smirked at me.
''Yeah? I told him not to spread it around,'' I replied, kind of angry with Jobin, also one of my friends.
''Well, it is Jobin. The kid spreads more gossip than most of the girls here. Anyway, I heard Hailey was pretty jealous,'' Aaron whispered, wiggling his eyebrows and smirking.
Hailey was the most popular -and hottest- girl at Red Bay secondary school, which was my high school. All the guys wanted her. Even I did. Well, I used to. "Keda's really cool. And hot. I'm good."
Aaron's not really a close friend of mine. We don't hang out much outside of school. Partly because he has the IQ of London Tipton, and also because he's really heartless when it comes to girls. I can't stand guys whose egos are bigger than their brains. But, Aaron's okay, I mean, he's good for a laugh or just when you need someone.
Aaron was about to reply, probably about how passing up a chance with Hailey is extremely stupid, but just then Mrs. Weldin turned around. She was repulsive, with her graying red hair in a tight bun, wrinkles, and permanent scowl. We hated each other equally. She glared at me. I looked up at her and smiled.
"Who is talking?" she demanded.
"I think you're hearing voices, ma'am," I told her.
"Raise your hand when you are speaking!" she yelled.
I raised my hand. "I think you're going insane," I informed her.
"Detention!" she barked.
I put my hand down. "Do you really think it's wise to be teaching a bunch of 16 year olds when you're completely mental?"
"Office. Now."
I sighed, slung my backpack over one shoulder, and headed towards the door. I turned around. "Don't miss me too much!" I slammed the door before she had the time to reply.
I walked down to the principal's office, knocked on the door twice, and went inside.
"Oh Drew, not again," the principal, Ms. Anthony sighed. "What did you do now?"
It's the same thing nearly every day. "Mrs. Weldin's in denial," I told her and I sat down in the seat across from hers, so now she was looking directly at me. I kind of felt bad for making her deal with me. She has enough to deal with on her own, she doesn't need me taking up her time.
''How is she in denial, Drew?'' she asked.
''I told her she's insane, but she just sent me here,'' I said.
Ms. Anthony sighed. I like her a lot because she was nice and always lets me off easy, but mostly because she hates Mrs. Weldin almost as much as I do. ''You have detention afterschool,'' she told me, though she didn't have to. I kind of figured I wasn't going to get a pat on the back and told to be nicer next time.
''Thanks, Ms. Anthony,'' I said and smiled at her. I walked out of her office.
I decided I'd had enough of math for one day, so I went outside to go see my friend Jack. Jack's the biggest pothead at school and always skips math class to get high. Fine with me. Jack was great because you could rant to him for hours and he'd just sit there and listen. Well, not really listen, but he'd be too baked to actually understand what you're saying, but same thing.
I walked through the forest near our school and found him smoking a joint, leaning against a tree. ''Drewwww!'' he sang.
''Hey man,'' I said, smiling. I couldn't remember what his eyes looked like when they weren't bloodshot.
''Want some?'' Jack asked, gesturing at his pocket. Full of weed, no doubt.
''I'm okay for now,'' I replied. ''So...I met a girl.''
''Did you? Man, you get laid yet?'' he asked. I laughed.
''Nah, not yet.'' I said.
We talked a while longer and I told him about Keda. He asked if I could do his math homework for him, but I told him I had hardly even been in math class. He laughed and I started talking about how looking at Mrs. Weldin was more painful then being stabbed in the eye with a fork. Then I just told him I had to go to English. We said goodbye, and I was back in class again.
The day passed by painfully slow. I slept during my entire detention. Mrs. Weldin hit my desk with a textbook in attempt to wake me up, but I slept right through it. The thing that did wake me up was my phone when it vibrated in my pocket. Keda. I thought. I raised my hand. ''May I go to the bathroom?'' I asked Mrs. Weldin.
''No.''
''Please?'' This was the first time Keda has texted me, I couldn't blow it.
''No.'' I was just about to complain, but then Mr. Larrik came into the room.
''Sorry to interrupt, but Mrs. Weldin, could you come with me? I need your expertise,'' Mr. Larrik said.
Mrs. Weldin turned her icy gaze at me. ''Don't. Move.'' She stomped out of the room with Mr. Larrik. I turned on my phone, clicked on my texts and saw one from an unknown number. It read:
Keda: White boy.
He smiled. She didn't like to say hello much.
Me: Hipster girl.
Keda: What's up
Me: Detention.
Keda: are you trying to impress me by being a bad boy now?
I grinned. She is literally the most perfect thing...
Me: You got me
Keda: I always do. But I gotta go
Me: okay
Keda: bye !
Me: bye Keda
I liked that name. I spent the last 10 minutes of detention thinking about her. She was absolutely fantastic. I had to make a move. Soon.
