Peggy put on her new dress. She loved it, even if Daddy thought it was a little short. She twirled around in the mirror and danced a little to the Andrews Sisters record playing in the living room. She slipped on her favorite shoes and headband. Today was her Sweet Sixteen, and she wanted to look her best.
"Peggy!" Her dad called.
"Coming, Daddy!" She called back. She did one final check, and then trotted to the kitchen where he was waiting.
Her father, Steve Rogers, looked disapprovingly at the dress, but didn't mention it. "You look lovely." He said "Happy birthday, my Peggy."
"Thanks, Daddy." Peggy said. She gave her dad a huge hug. He always gave the best hugs. He had told her that he used to be in the military, but Peggy couldn't believe that. He was strong, but he was too good to ever kill anyone.
"Is Mother coming today?" Peggy asked Steve as he kissed her hair. Her mother, Sharon, traveled a lot for work. She didn't have much time for family, so Peggy and Steve practically lived on their own. Steve home schooled his daughter, and she wouldn't have had it any other way... But she still missed her mother.
"Your mother couldn't make it today, sweetie." said Steve "But we'll still have a great time. I made your favorite cake!"
"Thanks, Daddy! You're the best!" Peggy forced a smile. She knew he missed Mother even more than she did.
The two of them sat at the island in the kitchen. They talked about Mother, and the Andrews Sisters (their favorite group), and the talked about church yesterday.
"The girls there won't talk to me..." Said Peggy "They think I'm weird."
"No, they're the ones who are weird." Her Daddy reassured her "Always staring at their telephones, never even looking at each other, talking in war-time code..."
"OMG!" Peggy gasped.
"LOL!" Steve added "BRB, BFF!"
"JK!" Peggy said with a sarcastic shrug.
"Exactly!" Steve said, laughing. Peggy laughed too. "Gosh you're gorgeous." Steve said "You told me none of the girls talk to you, what about the fellas?"
"Boys!" Peggy rolled her eyes and waved off the thought "They avoid me like the plague!"
"Well that's just on account of your Daddy." Steve teased "They know that to get to you, they have to go through me first!"
Peggy laughed loudly. The thought of her Daddy fighting was to absurd.
"Don't you worry," Steve said, sounding a bit more serious "You'll have boys calling you up soon enough. You're turning into a very beautiful young lady."
Peggy blushed and glanced down at the countertop.
"You know," He continued "Such a lovely young lady deserves a lovely birthday gift."
Peggy looked up at her Daddy. He was holding a small box like the ones you would get jewelry in.
"Oh, Daddy..." She breathed as he opened the box and lifted out a silver locket. "It's beautiful!"
"Open the locket." Steve said, handing it to her. She did so and saw it was engraved.
"To Peggy" it said "The most spectacular young lady in America."
"Oh, I love it!" Peggy gasped. A tear formed in her eye. "Thank you!"
Steve helped Peggy put the necklace on. She touched it lightly and smiled.
Just then there was a knock on the door. Steve went to see who it was. Peggy followed a few paces behind out of curiosity. Steve opened the door to see a friendly-looking man smiling.
"Can I help you, sir?" Steve asked with a smile.
"Sorry to bother you," said the man "I just noticed your car lights are on."
"Oh, thank you!" Said Steve. Peggy watched him leave the house to turn off the car lights. He left the house door open.
The stranger stepped into the house and briskly walked toward Peggy. Peggy backed away, but the man quickened his pace and put his hands out to grab her. Peggy let out a small scream and turned to run. As she turned she bumped another man who had snuck behind her. He grabbed her. Peggy screamed again, and began squirming. The man lost his grip and dropped her.
Steve heard Peggy's screaming and came running "Get away from her!" He shouted. He took out the first man with one punch and grabbed Peggy's attacker.
Peggy looked in horror as her house filled with people dressed in uniforms. One of them shot a taser at her Daddy.
"No!" She screeched.
Steve gave a cry of pain, but still fought. He positioned himself in front of Peggy.
Peggy cried as one, then another taser was fired at her Father. He roared in agony, but would not yield. His daughter meant the world to him, and he would fight until he had nothing left. Finally, he collapsed.
"Daddy?" Peggy said urgently through tears "Daddy?!"
Two of the men came forward. They grabbed her arms.
"No!" She cried "Let me go!" She jerked her arms. To her amazement, she pulled herself free.
"Agent Hill!" one of the men said quickly to a tall woman standing confidently in the room "She's a gamma!"
The woman sighed "Taser her too."
Peggy screamed as electricity surged through her body. She blacked out, and didn't remember anything after that.
