Joe glanced over at Ryder, trying his hardest to pay attention to the road and the wheezing kid in the back seat.

“Hey, buddy, stay with me, buddy.” Joe told him. Ryder looked over at him through his half closed eyes, “You gotta stay awake, buddy, we're going to go see your mom.”

Joe slammed his hand into the top of the steering wheel as he stepped on the gas.

“M-Mo-omm-y.” Ryder choked out. Joe looked back at him.

“Don't try to talk, buddy it'll only make it harder to breathe.” Joe told him. Joe hated that it was taking him so long to get to the hospital. One of the reasons why he regretted not calling an ambulance instead.

Joe saw that Ryder’s eyes were starting to get more droopy, “Buddy, keep your eyes open.”

Joe didn't know what to do. He didn't know what to pay more attention to, his driving or trying to keep Ryder awake.

“Hey buddy,” Joe called, making sure he had Ryder’s attention, “I know your mom said no about getting a dog, but if you stay awake with me, I promise I'll try to convince her to get you that dog.”

“That little white chihuahua that we saw at the pet store, remember?” Ryder nodded as he scratched at his red throat, “You can name him anything you want, buddy, and you can bring him on the road with me, so you don't get bored.”

Joe sighed out in relief as he immediately pulled into the hospital. He parked the car in the closest place and turned it off.

“Come on, buddy, we're here.” Joe held his arms towards Ryder. Ryder clung onto him, tightly. Joe kicked the door closed with his foot and started heading into the hospital.

“Help, I need help.” Joe watched as a nurse ran to him.

“What happened?” She asked as Joe turned Ryder to face her.

“He had nuts and he's allergic.”

“Was it a small amount?” She asked. Joe nodded.

The nurse immediately grabbed her flashlight, shining it into Ryder’s mouth. She looked towards the doctor, who had just walked up to them.

“His throat is swelling.”

“Put him on the stretcher.”

Ryder whined, not wanting Joe to let go of him, “D-Dad-dy no!”

“You're going to be okay, buddy.”

He definitely knew that Bailey was going to have his head.
