Another week passes by of me having to watch Darcy and Averon be all lovely dovey toward each other. They've been dating almost three months, but I can never get used to it.
"You still spend all of your time with her. What's the big deal?" Sage asks, sifting through the Chinese takeout we ordered. If I'm not with Darcy, I'm with Sage or at work. Neither of us look up from behind the counter when the front door opens.
"She's just so head over heels for him, I don't get it. He's not even that attractive. I'm sure if he asked, she'd give up a kidney for him."
Sage shakes his head. "She'd give up a kidney for you, but for him?" He shakes his head again. "For him, she'd probably give up a pair of shoes or something." I laugh at this and kick his chair.
"Whatever," I mumble, setting my container on the table, picking up a fortune cookie. "What's going on with you?"
"Besides opening doors for people every day?" Sage sits up and looks at me with intense eyes. "I'm getting a record deal and I just bought a mansion."
I shake my head and let my hair fall across the back of the chair. "Ha ha." I kick his chair again. "Seriously, who's little Sagey putting his dick in these days?"
    "That's disgusting."
    "Just answer the question."
Sage sighs and shakes his head, not looking at me. "No one. I don't have a girlfriend."
"You never have a girlfriend. Isn't little Sagey lonely cuddling a bulldog at night instead of a female human?"
Sage kicks my chair this time and I chuckle. "There's just..." He stares at me for a little with a look I can't describe. "There's just no one I've found that I've really liked."
"Seriously? It's New York, the love of your life could be right around the corner." Sage does a small smile while looking into his container of food. "I know you're thinking of someone."
He looks up at me with the sweet, little smile still on his face. "Ok, but what about you?"
    "What about me?"
"You ever gonna settle down instead of having one night stands every week? There's gotta be someone you're interested in," he says, mocking me. Even though he's just joking, a face flashes in my mind for a quick second.
"I'm not a relationship person, you know that."
"Oh cmon, you're saying you've never been in love?"
I shrug, throwing my container in the trash. "I was sixteen. Now I'm not sixteen. I'll just fall in love when fate decides it's time," I say, my voice getting higher at the end to indicate I'm joking.
Sage smiles and throws his container away. "Ok, I gotta work. Up up," he motions for me to stand up.
"Wait, we haven't opened our fortune cookies yet. We always open our fortune cookies." Sage agrees and we open our cookies at the same time. "What does yours say?"
"'A big opportunity arises for you in the near future'," Sage reads with a look on his face. It's clear he thinks it's bullshit. These usually are. "Yours?"
I clear my throat and read the slip of paper out loud with a fake announcer voice. "'Your true love is right around the corner'-ok that's just a coincidence," I throw away the paper while Sage laughs. "That was just a coincidence."
    "Sure it was, Eli."

"Thank you," I say to the clerk after she gives me my change.
"No, thank you," she responds, smiling big. She's still blushing from earlier when I walked up to the counter to pay for my six-pack of beer and other groceries. I'm sure her face was the color of a tomato in the photo we took together.
"You ready?" Liam asks, holding the door open for me. I nod and smile at the girl once more who's beaming at liam and I. I'll never understand fangirls.
"I think she was about to faint," I tell Liam when we walk down the street.
"Good thing she didn't, otherwise one of us would've had to do mouth-to mouth," Liam nods.
"Then she just would've fainted again." We both chuckle and sip our drinks walking down the street.
"Have you seen that girl again, the one you're swooning over?" Liam asks, nudging me.
"I'm not swooning over her. That was a one-time thing."
Liam shrugs. "A one-time thing after you asked her out again, and she said no."
I wave my hand, brushing off the subject. Honestly, I have been thinking a bit about Eli. She made an impression on me the night we met and once again the second night.

"So do you have a boyfriend?" I asked after we got a bit more comfortable with each other. I don't know why it was such a funny question, but Eli snickered and took a long drag from what seemed to be her third cigarette since I came in. This girl was a heavy smoker, and so young. "So that's a no?"
Eli tilted her head toward me so I met her gaze with her big grey eyes. She took another long drag without breaking eye contact. She blew the smoke in my face through her slender lips, but it didn't bother me. It just drew attention to her lips. Maybe this was her move, how she drew guys in. Even if it wasn't, I still wanted to kiss her.
"What's Eli short for?" She seemed to avoid all of my questions and just stare at me. She could make a guy curious, that's for sure. To my surprise, she actually answered this time.
"Elijah." Eli crumpled the butt of the cigarette in the tray between us. "Parents expected a boy and got chirpy, little me." It sounded sarcastic, like she was a bit angry at saying this, but the smile on her face said differently. I smiled back at her contagiously, shifting my weight so I was closer to her. "What about you? Where does one get the name Tomlinson?"
I shrug, not totally knowing the answer. "Guess it's British," I try wittingly. She doesn't react, but I can tell she wanted to laugh or at least was amused. The corners of her eyes twitched for a second but her smile stayed the same.
After a little while, she warms up to me a bit. I've gotten a giggle or two out of her and somewhat longer answers. We both order more drinks, and Eli keeps smoking.
"What do you do for a living?" I ask, my mind feeling a bit fuzzy.
Eli sighs and tilts her head so her hair falls behind her nicely. Either it's me or the alcohol, but she looks more beautiful the more I look at her. "I'm a photographer. Weddings, charity events, that shit. People who just want to capture that special moment," she tells me sarcastically, holding a hand over her heart.
"Well, that sounds quite lovely." I play with her hand a little, which we both stare at.
Eli chuckles a little. "You British people and your vocab, like 'lovely' or 'bloody'-whoa that rhymes." It didn't, but the drinks have obviously gone to her head too and she giggles a little before putting on a straight face.
"What about you Americans and all your cursing?"
Eli snickers and raises her eyebrows at me. "Please, you're British. Your first word was probably fuck." I chuckle and hold the back of her chair, leaning closer.
"You're not wrong," I tell her. Eli's face gets real serious when she looks at me. "I'm just joking," I assure her, and we both laugh it off.
Eli finishes her last cigarette and starts to get up. "I need to go home," she says and stumbles off her chair.
"I'll take you there." I help her out the bar, her holding my hand and forearm for balance. I'm not the best stand though, since I'm wobbling a bit myself.
"It was very nice to meet you Eli," I say finally when we're parallel to each other on the sidewalk. I take a few steps closer to her and a few more when she doesn't object.
Eli opens her mouth to say something but nothing comes out when my face gets closer to hers. Her gaze shifts from my eyes to my lips, meanwhile I'm just focused on kissing her. I push the hair back from her face and cup her cheek when our lips touch. Maybe it's just the alcohol or Eli's smoker breath, but it's a really good kiss.

"Where do you want to go for lunch?" Liam asks me.
I shrug. "Don't care, mate. Up to you."
