In 2031, 3 years after Neil had moved to New York, Neil was working in a little coffee shop. Neil was working a late shift, and it was almost 2am. Only a few customers had visited, but Neil kept his hopes high. On his therapist's checklist, the only thing he hadn't been able to was fall in love, but after Matilda locket, he'd locked his heart away (ironic much?), and he didn't believe he was capable of love.
2am on the dot, a drunk woman stumbled into the shop. Neil hadn't had alcohol in two years, and seeing anyone drunk can trigger him a small bit, but Neil was strong. Well 'strong' is the wrong word, more 'resilient'. The lady asked for a latte, and had trouble sitting down, so Neil helped, opening the chair like a proper gentleman, if there is such a thing.
Neil ended his shift then, but he wouldn't leave this woman be, not in the state she was in. He sat down across from her.
"Where have you been?" He asked.
"Nowhere, just a few bars, that's all." She looked surprised he'd even talked to her.
"You're quite blatantly drunk, and I don't want anything to happen to you, or anyone you live wi-"
"Oh I live alone." She chuckled a bit, and for the first time Neil saw this lady's eyes. They were chocolatey brown, with fingers of black sprouting from the pupil.
"Well at least let me drive you home, I wouldn't want anything to happen to you, especially at this hour." Neil knew all too well what alcohol could do.
"Oh, well that could be a problem... I... Uhhh well I don't.. have a home.." Neil realised that this poor lady was homeless, living off alcohol.
"Come home with me then, I know all too well what it's like to be alone. What's your name?"
"Matilda.'' She smiled.
