Prologue

Vampires. In Hawaii? That's probably the most stupidest idea that anyone could possibly think of. Hawaii's known for its constant endless summers. Sun and vampires just don't go in the same sentence. Or maybe verbally they do, since I've said it before. Anyway, that so wasn't the point.
The point was that I was currently being dragged reluctantly into St. Damien Academy. This was no choice of mine. Queen Lissa Dragomir ordered that I transfer into another academy for 'safe-keeping'. Safe-keeping? I need safe-keeping? I could kick a Strigoi's ass in 10 minutes flat. Why was I being the one transferred away from all my friends? So not fair.
Her explanation to me was: 'Princess Seraphina Voda, please understand that we will be transferring you for safe-keeping at St. Damien Academy. I understand that you're perfectly capable of handling yourself, especially with the help of your Guardian, Dante Volkov, but we must ensure your safety at all costs'. Blah, blah, blah. At that time, she had probably used her Spirit element against me, which was probably why I hadn't lighted up something into flames right there and then. It vexed me how easily she could soothe anyone, especially me with that gift of hers.
Heaving out an annoyed sigh, I continued glaring out the window of the privately owned jet of St. Damien that had came to retrieve me. It was poshly decorated, with the whole cheery, sapphire mixed with emerald theme of the island I was going to. The plush carpeted floor was blue with flecks of painted fish at the bottom. The walls were painted a lavish green and decked with vintage photos mixed with modern photos of the island O'ahu. There were even small, potted palm trees encompassing the plane. The scent of plumeria, or at least that's what they called it, was nauseating. I suppose the humans attending this aircraft hadn't taken into consideration the delicate noses Moroi possessed.
Oh well. It wasn't like I was entirely Royal Moroi status. I was like a mixed mutt. I was a Dhampir with Voda and Alchemist blood. I'm the result when a play boy royal Moroi wants to get kinky with a cold-hearted Alchemist. I didn't even know who my father was. He left my poor Alchemist mother to care for me. And let me tell you, I probably wasn't the most well-behaved child, either. I had grown up thinking I was just a regular human, I had even went to school among human children. It wasn't until I was a teenager and started experiencing blood lust that my mother slammed the low-down on me. I was half-vampire, the daughter of a royal Moroi. You can imagine the guffaws of disbelief I gave her. It wasn't until I had my first taste of blood that I believed her.
So I lived with my bloodlust and with much persuading from Sydney Sage, an influential lady in the Alchemist ranks, I was allowed to become an Alchemist. I had lived a fairly normal life, of an Alchemist, anyway, covering up the tracks of the dirty Strigoi and Moroi. That is, until a major Strigoi attack wiped out the entire Voda family. Which, sadly, left me the only illegitimate child of the Voda bloodline. Which, sadly, left a huge target mark on my back.
"Princess, we have almost arrived."
I shifted my unfocused glare at the window and up to the bulky man sitting next to me. "Stop calling me that."
Dante gave me his signature lop-sided smirk. "Alright. Whatever you say, Princess."
I growled and narrowed my eyes at him. "If I really am such a Princess to you, why won't you listen to me?"
"I'm your Guardian, not your loyal subject. Besides, it amuses me when you overreact when things don't go your way," he explained, using his thick Russian accent that I had to learn quickly to understand.
I continued to glare at him, to try to stare him down, but instead, he just met my eyes with his own calm, collected hazel ones. Tch. I was the first one to look away, feeling ridiculous in trying to stare down a guy that was taller than me. However, that often was the case when I tried to stare somebody 'down'. I was vertically challenged, 5'0". If I was going to be half-vampire, I could have at least received the physical traits of one. Instead of being incredibly short and very much so average looking compared to the I-Just-Walked-Off-The-Runway Moroi.
"Things should always go my way, the sane way," I grumbled, peering out the window once more to see an approaching emerald island surrounded by rumpled waves of blue.
Dante laughed. "That is why I call you a princess, Princess."
I smacked my head against the window.
