When she'd said that being able to say No was an important skill, he hadn't believed her. That is, until he was stuck with 5 wriggling bundles of fur in a cardboard box.Cass was out on a mission with Steve, "I have to say, I'm glad she's on my side," but Fury had directed him to stay home. He hadn't said why, but everyone knew. It was common sense. Being in love with a team-mate could possibly jeopardize the entire operation. So, Bucky, wanting to make it up to Cass, had set out in the state of New York to find a kitten or 2.
He'd found some kittens, alright, free, too.
The girl, short, somewhat thin, had been holding a box on the sidewalk. He'd tried to approach as slowly and non-threatening as he could; according to Sam, he "struck fear into the hearts of citizens everywhere even if he looked like a sad puppy." The girl, probably in her teens, still looked weary.
"You have kittens?" he'd asked, a hint of excitement in his voice. She'd visibly calmed after that, convinced that someone who was excited about kittens wouldn't do any harm.
"Yeah, yeah they're free, too. Take 'em, take all of 'em if you want to, I jus' need 'o get rid of 'em," she'd said hurriedly, shoving the box in his face. He'd looked down into there, so touched by the little furry bodies. They were all black, except for one outlaw with patches of white. He knew they didn't need 5 fucking kittens, but how could he say no to those adorable things?
"I'll take them."
He had carried them with him to the pet store, lifted cans and cans and even a bag of cat food. He had no idea how to take care of the loud little buggers, but Cass did. That he knew for sure.
Now, he was home, back in Cass's new apartment. He gently sat the box down, took the kittens down one by one on the table so that he could examine them. With gentle hands, he felt around, looking for anything abnormal. He didn't know how he knew how to do it, but he did.
Bucky grabbed one of the cans from one of his many hidden pockets, opened it easily. It looked too solid for them to eat by itself, so he retreated to the kitchen to get a spoon, only to come back and find one of them missing.
"Damn it," he murmured, looking under the table and walking on the tip of his toes. It was the white and black kitten that had apparently used the chair to get to the ground. He could see the tiny claw marks from where he had landed.
"Bucky?"
He looked up, surprised. Cass stood there, blood on her neck, face, and hair. Bucky immediately went to her, desperately hoping that the kitten would turn up while he was seeing what had happened. "Are you okay? Is that your blood?"
She set her hands on his shoulder, looking behind him. "You... You got me kittens?" she murmured, blue eyes flickering between him and the bundles of fur on the table. He nodded, pulling her closer to him. She didn't oblige, but he still somehow knew she was looking over his shoulder at the kittens. "Mhm," he hummed, glad to feel her near him. She'd been gone for a couple of days, left him somewhat down and alone.
After a moment, when Cass started fidgeting, he let her go for the kittens in that somewhat immature way she did things sometimes. Bucky watched with a grin as she tended to them, but then he noticed it. On the pant of her leg, was the little bugger that had escaped his grasp. With nimble hands, she reached down and grabbed him by the scruff, smiling.
Bucky approached after the kittens started eating, pushing and tumbling over one another to get the food.
"I didn't mean to get, you know, fi-" Cass pulled him to her by his jacket, harshly pressing her lips to his. With a small, slightly embarrassing noise he complied, [A/N: gentle crying] moving his hands to her hair. God, it was great, but he had to ruin it and open his damn eyes to see one of the kittens staring right at him.
He pulled away, pointing at the kitten, the one that had escaped, accusingly. She turned around, picking up the kitten carefully and held him in her arms. The little thing purred loudly, nuzzling up to her effortlessly.
"You know," she began, looking up at him, "we should call him James. You both apparently like to be near me," she explained with a small smirk. Bucky rolled his eyes, stroked the kitten's fur with his regular hand. "Yeah, yeah, you act like you don't like it," he muttered, his smile negating the words. She raised an eyebrow at him, blue eyes shining.
"James it is," he murmured, taking the kitten from Cass and settling it on his shoulder.
