Monsters {Ruby x Dr. Whale} [OUAT] fluff

It was quiet in the diner and Ruby glance outside, watching leaves fall to the ground. Fall had arrived in Maine and that wasn't something to be taken lightly. Emma was sitting at the bar discussing the snow hauling measures with her dad and someone called for the waitress. She turned to answer and out of the corner of her eye she saw Victor Whale come through the door. After taking the check from the dwarves she turned to the Doctor, who was sitting at the bar with his head in his hands.

"Tough day?" she asked from the register.

"As if all my days weren't the same." She smiled at the top of his head and patted his back on the way to the kitchen.

"Same time every day and the same words. Sometimes I wonder about how this works."

"You know how it does," he said to himself, leaning over the bar to take a glass and a bottle of gin.

"Not too much. You need to get back home," she called. The doors swung shut and he smiled, taking a swig of the alcohol. The diner emptied besides the two of them and Granny went back to the inn with a quick goodbye.

"Leaving anytime soon?" Ruby asked, cleaning off one of the tables and putting up the chairs.

"I don't know, are you?"

"I was thinking about turning in for the night. It's been a long day." Whale rolled his eyes and put the glass in the dishwasher.

"Are you only this polite around me or does everyone just think you're a dick?" Ruby asked, pushing her hair under a hat.

"Goodbye, Ruby," he said, slightly waving.

"Same time tomorrow th-" she was cut off by the door shutting. She watched him through the window and he turned the other way, walking towards the docks. For a moment she turned around and then she saw that the bottle was empty and she'd just put out a new one that morning. She quickly shut off the lights and locked the door, following the scent of gin. When she go to the docks she walked as quietly as she could with her heels and for a second she thought he was going to turn around, but instead he jumped. She used her wolf skills and caught him without thinking.

They talked for the night and she drove him home, still worried about him, but sure enough the next day he came in. Instead of the bottle of gin though, he took a hot cocoa and talked to Ruby till after closing time. After a while he went back to gin, but regulated himself. Emma, who was in every day for something or the other, noticed their relationship escalating. She mentioned it to Ruby one day before Whale had come in and all she said was, "I ran after him."

"It's the first full moon since the curse broke. I don't know if I'm going to be able to pull it together. I'll see you later," she said. Granny shut and locked the door.

The next morning the whole town was in panic. A dead body and missing wolf. Of course Whale went off on the hunt. He had to find Ruby and keep her safe. People were going mental about what she'd done.

"Whale, you should be at the hospital," David said, barring his way into the forest.

"No."

"What are you even going for?"

"I am helping!" he growled, shoving past his arm before bursting into a run. He knew what he was going for. He was going for her. He was finally paying her back. He was running after her.
