Chapter 2 - Unexpected Encounters

Sounds of dripping water can be heard virtually everywhere in the depths, like an old sewer, the aroma of rotten wood spreads towards the basement like mustard gas on a battlefield.

"Shhhh!", Cassie whispers "I think I hear the two robbers nearby."

The two bend down and maneuver around a support beam, the dim lighting makes it very hard to see anything in the black mist. Cassie prepares for any attempt of resistance by unsheathing out her custom made iron short sword; a blacksmith-exclusive weapon with a longer reach of 22 inches and a counterweight with more weight for a more heavier hit. Katerena follows by taking out her rather more appropriate stone sword; a common weapon in the hands of an average citizen in terms of self-defense.

Cassie sneaks towards the other support beam, weapons drawn. She commanded Katerena to standby just in case anything happens. The sounds of soft splashing must have given Cassie's presence away, but she continues anyway. She takes one of the torches from the wall and carefully proceeds around the beam, unknowing who or what is behind it.

Shambling noises could indicate that it could be a larger mob, maybe even a human, however, the question of 'who is there' was quickly answered by a brown bat swooping away. Cassie stutters, almost knocking the torch out of her hand, Katerena giggles.

"Aside from the whole 'do not tell anyone I brought you here' stuff, also do not tell that I was scared by a little brown bat!", she threatens as she sheaths her sword into her inventory .

Cassie humiliated walks further into the basement levels, sounds of water dripping continue, and the rank smell grows stronger. The two manages to enter one of the more bleak areas of the basement; the old mining entrance. Cassie and Katerena jump down into the entrance, to take a shortcut to the portal room, without raising suspicions that she is bringing an unauthorized citizen into the secrets of the Rock.

Their footsteps seem to attract one of a hostile mob because the sounds of dragging on the stone vocalize throughout the entrance. Cassie pulls out her sword and prepares to strike, then a zombie wanders into the mine, looking for anyone to fill its stomach.

"Piece of cake!", she exclaims. She dashes towards the unexpecting zombie and swings her sword towards the chest, killing the zombie instantly. "Now let's get out of her quickly!" she yells.

Cassie and Katerena dash towards the exit and takes a sharp left to a set of doors. "Do you know where is the portal room?" Katarena questions.

"Yep," she says as she activates a secret torch on one of the walls, revealing a secret entrance to the portal room. Part of the wall collapses, revealing one of the portals. They both were about to enter, but were interrupted by the voice of two people in the room, they both assume that they are the robbers.

"Come on, Shane! Are we really going to go in there?", complains one assumed robber.

"Yeah we are, now stop being a wuss and hurry up before anyone hears us!", orders another.

Cassie and Katerena both pull out their weapons and charged into the room like two enraged bulls, catching the two robbers off guard. Cassie readies to swing her sword but the robber threw a piece of wood at Cassie, throwing her off to the side.

The two now-enraged and scared robbers pull out their own weapons; two iron longswords and a boarding ax. Cassie and Katerena both stand at a distance, facing their black hoodie-wearing fugitives in a high-noon western duel.

"Shane, c'mon, I can't fight a girl, and I'm fighting two of them!?", shrieks Shane's partner as he looks around the room, nervously and stutters when Cassie lunges forward to scare him.

"Yeah me too...", he replies back, drops of sweat can be seen running down around the side of his face.

Cassie and Katerena both raise their swords, anticipating for any resistance or retreats. Just then, Shane, yells out a deafening cry and charges towards the two girls like the tip of the spear of a Spartan's. Cassie focuses and stares down her opponent, followed by a swift parry against Shane's incoming ax. His accomplice also attacks by lunging forward towards Katerena, but she blocks it and delivers a swing towards his left arm, dropping the sword in his left hand. He stutters back, and checks to see the damage she just done, then resumes back into the duel. He goes into a defensive stance and attempts to block Katerena's attacks.

Meanwhile, the other two deadlocked fighters both swing, slash, block, and evade to gain an advantage of the fight, where Cassie, barely phased, takes a step back away from her more-wounded adversary; Shane. Exhausted, he stops and looks towards Cassie with sweat all over his face. He runs back and pulls out a potion of healing, he rushes to open the cork and drink his only means of winning the fight.

Cassie charges, knocking him over and spilling the potion all over the battleground. On the ground, Shane sweeps, knocking Cassie off of her feet. Cassie retaliates and slowly crawls towards him, Shane shuffles back in fear, but then he thinks of something when Cassie gets a hold of him.

He gets up and throws himself and Cassie into the active portal right beside them. The other two combatants pause and see that their friends have entered the portal.

"This is all your fault!", shrieks Katerena.

"Yeah, like I'm not the one that decided to attack two guys observing this room.", he answers sarcastically.

"That's it!", Katerena elbows him in the face, stunning him and holds him by shoulders. "Let's see; if they return in the next 10 seconds, then you won't die. If they don't...well." He squirms around while cursing and hollering to let him go, but she doesn't compile.

10 seconds passes, neither Cassie or Shane returns. Katerena, enraged rushes towards the portal while holding Shane's partner as a battering ram, taking them both into the portal. The once battlefield now dies down in silence with items of the two factions scattered about, but the battle claimed no victors, no losers, only victims.
