Finally! A bonus for Niall! Hope you guys like it...
It was Niall's third day home, and also the day of your doctors appointment. These few days had been pure bliss, barely spending any time apart. It was stupid, silly teenage-feeling love. But it was your love, he was your man, and you loved it. Being the amazing man he is, he had gotten out of be early and made you a lovely breakfast of eggs, beans and toast, your favorite. It was a lovely surprise, eating in bed with one of your all time favorite movies playing on the tv. Though your perfect morning couldn't distract you from the excitement both you and Niall had for the doctors appointment.
You had to leave by one, but Niall insisted on leaving half an hour early. It was adorable, seeing how nervous Niall got before the appointments. It was almost comical how flustered he would get.
You were feeling guilty and quite stupid thinking about the appointments you've missed and failed to reschedule. Your schedule was always so busy, but you should've made time for your baby. How could you be a good mother if you couldn't even carve an hour or two out of a month to visit the doctor? You were nervous, knowing that something that could have been spotted earlier could have been missed because of you missing appointments. You were a nurse and you know how important it is for regular check ups. It's been over a month and a half since you've had a visit, and you felt so guilty about it. You were nervous and excited at the same time.
The car ride turned silent ten minutes in, like Niall had suddenly realized what could happen at this appointment. You didn't even want to think about the possibilities. You were so upset with yourself that you had neglected your child. Your emotions were everywhere and it was so difficult to hold back the tears.
When you arrived, Niall helped you out of the car and into the building. It was a quick check in, and despite being so early, you were brought directly into a room. It was times like these where Niall's fame had its perks.
You gulped as you sat down on the bed, wanting to go home. You wanted to believe that everything would be fine. If it wasn't, it would be all your fault. If something that could have been prevented or fixed by regular sonograms, you don't know if you could ever forgive yourself. You grasped Niall's hand, holding it so tightly his knuckles turned white.
"I'm sorry," you whispered. Leaning you head against his stomach. You let a single tear fall accidentally, but quickly swiped it away.
He leaned down and whispered, "For what, babe?"
"I missed appointments. I'm sorry I messed everything up."
"Could you excuse us for a moment?" He said to the nurse, who nodded her head and quickly left. He pulled up a chair and turned back to you, kissing your forehead. "It's my fault too. Don't blame yourself. All those times I begged you to stay? Touched you till you couldn't resist? It's more my fault than yours."
"No, Niall. It was all me. I'm the pregnant one. I'm the one who could leave. I'm not the one that millions of girls were depending on to perform. It's my fault."
"Shush. I don't want you thinking like that, princess. Our baby girl or boy will be fine. They'll be fine. Think positive, yeah?"
"Yeah. I'm good." You smiled softly, leaning against his hand. "But are you mad?"
"Mad? 'bout what?" He spoke softly, running his calloused thumb over your now wet cheeks.
"That I put our baby at risk?"
"No, baby. This little ones going to be fine. We made a mistake. It won't happen again. We've learned."
"Yeah I know, but I'm mad. I'm a freaking nurse! How could I be so stupid?"
"You're not stupid. It was a little bump in the road. Nothing to fret over. Now can we get the doctor in here so you can see that you're worried about nothing?"
"Okay, okay." You wiped your cheeks one last time while Niall opened the door and called for the doctor. Like he said, everything would be fine, you told yourself.
"Are we ready to take a look at you and the baby now?" The doctor said, smiling when she entered the room. It was a different doctor than your usual one, you had been told that he was away on a golf trip. You nodded, and she asked to you stand so she could weigh you. You stood on the scale, knowing you were bigger than other expectant mothers at this point in the pregnancy. People, who weren't doctors, had assured you that you just carried big and that you had a big baby, and you accepted that.
"Okay, so that's a little more weight gain than we like to see. That's okay though, nothing too serious. Can you lie down again for me?" You smiled weakly, doing as told. Niall held your hand as she rolled your top up and took out the measuring tape. She began under your breasts, stretching it down to the base of your stomach. She then looked at the marking where her thumb and index finger, and looks puzzled.
"When was the last time you were in?" She asked and you began to become worried. Though you were so confused as to how she could tell if anything was wrong with your baby just from your weight and size.
"About a month and a half ago. Why? Is everything alright?"
"Let's just start the ultrasound and we'll see." She smiled, but you looked up at Niall worriedly. She started the machine and squirted the gel onto your skin. In a few short moments, she said, "So there's your baby, looking perfectly healthy. He seems to be normal size, so I just want to find out why you have gained so much extra weight. No offense, because you look amazing."
You smiled, but didn't look away from the screen. Because of your medical training, you knew what you were looking at. She continued to move it around. Minutes passed until she saw a mass on the screen that wasn't the baby, or any of your organs. The angle wasn't right to make out exactly what is was, but your face turned white.
Everything and anything bad that it could be came to mind. You were once again kicking yourself for missing so many appointments. She turned the monitor off after seeing your change in color, and kept it so that only she could see. She moved the ultrasound around and looked completely shocked.
"This is so strange. I didn't mean to worry you, but it wasn't in your chart. I'm so sorry. Your babies are doing fine. Somehow your doctor completely forgot to put in your chart that you were having twins! Pages must be missing, I'll go check with the front desk," she got up to leave, but you were too shocked to say anything. Niall was able to speak up, though, and she turned around.
"She's no having twins, just one." He said, flustered.
"What? Right here," she turned the monitor on so an image she took appeared. "Here is baby a, and baby b right behind. Are you saying, that... You didn't know you were expecting twins?"
