I sat at the café and waited for Josh.
I looked at my phone and texted my mom.
Me: how much you wanna bet he's gonna ditch me?
mother dearest: How much you wanna bet if he does that I'll bring him to the ditch.
Me: omg calm down jeez louise
mother dearest: did he say what time?
Me: idk I think he said around 8.
mother dearest: it's 8:12...
Me. ya I know that's why I think hes ditching me
mother dearest: well let's think positive. Maybe traffic?
me: on a Sunday night?
mother dearest: yeah you're right. maybe he got caught up in something and he'll end up showing?
me: that sounds a bit okay. I hope he comes :(
Then I heard the bell from the door ding.
I saw Josh sit across from me at the table.
"Hi."
I slightly smiled.
"Hi."
Josh sighed.
"I'm sorry I'm late..I got into an argument with my dad."
I nodded.
"That's fine. So uh,how've you been?"
"I've been better. You?"
"Same here."
The conversations started getting awkward until the waiter came up to us and asked for our orders.
"A double chocolate frappé huh?" Josh asks. I suddenly feel insecure what I get and look down.
"I'll have one of those too."
Was he doing this to make me feel better or?
"I wasn't judging you,Amber. I never heard of those and decided to try it out."
I sighed in relief.
"Thank god,I thought you were and thinking I was fat."
Josh's brown eyes widened.
"God no! I would never!"
"Well thanks."
.
.
.
After our hang out,we decided to go to the lake that was down the road.
We walked towards the deck and sat at the edge.
I looked at my reflection in the water.
Disgusting.
I thought to myself.
"You know..I always come here."
I look up at Josh, who was staring into the distance.
"Really?"
"HmMm. I always come here to think and just..calm down you know?"
I nodded and looked back at the flowing water.
"Yeah..do you come here often?"
Josh chuckled.
"Too often. I usually come here when I get into heated arguments or something."
"Then why did you bring me?"
"To show how you need time to think and not worry so much."
I think I was starting to like this Josh. I mean he has this personality where you kinda instantly like him. And his eyes were gorgeous,I'll tell you that. And his smile kinda made me happy. His laugh was adorable. And his-oh God. Am I developing a crush?
I realized I've been staring at Josh for a while when he noticed.
"Are you okay?"
I nodded my head.
"Y-yeah. I'm okay."
Josh got up and held his hand out. I look at him confused.
"Come on,Ambs. It's getting late. And I don't want your mother worried about you."
I grabbed his hand (and holy cow did I want to hold it forever) and got up.
"Wouldn't your mom be worri-"
"No. That woman hates me."
I shook my head and kept wondering why they hate each other so much.
.
.
.
"Josh?"
"Hm?"
"You don't have to walk me home."
We were walking home since both of us walked to the café. And we were only 5 blocks away from my house.
Josh scoffed.
"I do,though."
"Why?"
"To make sure you get home safe."
I stopped dead in my tracks.
"Why?" I asked, wondering why he cared so much.
"Because you could get hurt or kid-" I cut him off as he turned around to face me.
"I mean why do you care so much? I thought you'd be that guy where he doesn't give a shit -"
"But he actually does?"
I stared blankly at him.
"And I care because you're my friend. Right? I'm suppose to keep friends safe and happy right?"
I sighed and continued walking.
"I'm walking home by myself."
Josh threw his arms into the air.
"Ambs,come on!"
Ambs. Why did he give me such a nickname? I found it quite weird.
"Fine. Walk me home."
"Thank you."
.
.
.
"So he wants you safe and happy?" my mom asked, placing a plate of cheesecake in front of me.
"Yeah. And he calls me Ambs. And I find it weird."
She knitted her eyebrows together.
"Why is it weird?"
"I don't know," I stabbed my fork into the creamy cake and took a bite. "it's just..I've never really had a friend."
"What's he like?"
"Well..he has blue hair and tattoos."
My mom raised an eyebrow at me.
"Dyed hair and tattoos?"
"Yeah. But he's actually really sweet. And he showed me the lake that's down from Lady Café and told me he would think and try to not worry so much. Then we came home."
Then my mom came over to me and hugged me.
"Awh! My little girl went on her first date!"
"Yeah. At age eighteen. That's pretty sad."
"It's never too late to have a first date!"
"Was it even a date?"
"I'll be honest. It probably was." She grabbed my fork and ate a piece of the cake on my plate.
"And also,if you like him so much tell him."
I rolled my eyes.
"Okay, well first, this is my cake. and second,I don't know if I like him in that way. I'm not sure if he feels the same."
My mom shook her head.
"If he wants you safe and happy this bad,he has to."
