Minutes later me Jeffery and my other three friends Josh, Osvaldo, and Shelvin were sitting down in our schools library contemplating recent events.
"It has to be airborne" Josh was saying "There's no other way it could have spread so quickly."
"Or maybe it’s a vaccine gone wrong like I Am Legend" Osvaldo chimed in.
Our discussion was about how the virus had started. We all loved, and in turn studied, zombies. I brought up the thing that was worrying me.
"What about leaving" I said cutting both of them off. "This is not some TV show we can just speculate on, this is real. And I think leaving is a bad idea.” I said with a little more force than I had meant. "You guys know what happens if we go out there. There is no way the military or the police can protect us all."
"Dude the military knows what they’re doing, that's why there the military." Jeffery said.
"Stop being stupid." I responded.
"Jeez Vincent calm down. You're overreacting." Jeffery said clearly angry I had just called him stupid.
"Dude I know more about this than you, trust me." I said as I held my hand up mockingly
"You had better calm your ass down right now." Jeffery responded his voice full of menace
"I WILL NOT CALM DOWN!" I yelled letting out my full frustration with the whole thing. "IF WE GO OUT THERE WE DIE! STATISTICALLY SPEAKING THERE IS NO WAY WE MAKE IT HALF WAY TO THE POLICE STATION!" I yelled.
"CHILL THE FUCK OUT DUDE DON'T GO YELLING AT ME IT'S NOT LIKE I CAN CONTROL THIS." he yelled back.
"YOU KNOW I'M RIGHT SO LISTEN TO ME!" I pleaded
"AND WHAT MAKES YOU THE SMART ONE? HUH? YOU THINK YOU KNOW EVERYTHING ZOMBIE BOY?" We were standing up as I looked around. Everyone was watching us. I grabbed my bag and walked out.
The cool hallway was a relief compared to the furnace the library had felt like. I leaned on the wall trying to grab hold of myself. I was shaking again. I was staying, that much I had decided. There was no way we could leave with the entire high school and not attract a huge ass horde. Not to mention how blocked up the road had to be. On top of it all we still knew nothing about the zombies. Did they run? How strong where they? Which sense did they rely on? How long till people reanimate? I was thinking these things when the door opened. An upperclassmen, junior or senior, was looking at me.
"Yeah?" I asked.
“You seemed pretty upset in there." He said.
I nodded "I'm staying" I said "I just don’t want to stay alone."
"Well I agree with you." he said after a pause "There is no way we as a school could make it. Me and a few of my friends are staying. We're going to fortify this place. You in?" he said extending his hand.
I stared in surprise. This guy was for real.
"Yes, definitely." I said shaking his hand.
"But," I said as he turned to leave. "I think we need to know what we're dealing with first. We have no idea what kind of zombies these are. We need to observe them. Gather data."
He nodded "Well lets go." he said. "What better place than the street." I chuckled until I realized he was serious.
"This guy is fucking crazy." I thought.
