The rescue group wasn’t actually a group, just me and this other guy Noah who volunteered because his girlfriend was part of the expedition. We set out the next morning before the sun rose so no one would see us leaving. We ducked threw the still ruined street avoiding the jagged edges of cars that had been subjected to the elements for the past three months. It was cold for the first time in a while even thought it was the middle of November. We both were wearing dark grey hoodies to blend with the pale dawn.

We jogged for a bit trying to get to the hospital and back before dark but realized it would take at the most two hours to walk there so we just walked. Noah was pretty quiet, his eyes sweeping every building, never off guard. His watchfulness eventually paid off when he suddenly pushed me down and slammed his knife into the skull of a zombie.

“Gotta watch out for those creepers.” he said helping me to my feet.

“The what?” I asked never hearing them be referred to as creepers before.

“Well they're creepy,” he said “and it’s easier to call them that then zombies. Zombie conjures the image of something that was once human.”

He looked down at the zombie he had just killed

“It’s easier to kill them if they are just monsters.” I nodded.

“Let’s get going.” I said “We're almost there.”

“Shit!” Noah swore. I was looking threw my backpack for a snack and looked up to see what he was so upset about. A massive truck stretching the entire road was overturned in the middle of the street. He kicked a car and grabbed his hair

“Who makes trucks this big?” he yelled.

” Dude chill out.” I said “I'm sure there’s a way around it.”

He looked down

“Sorry.” he said “Amy- I mean the group is probably suffering every second we keep waiting.”

“I’m sure they’re fine.” I said “I got friends there too. But yelling isn’t going to get us over this truck.”

He nodded. A small thud sounded nearby and we both dropped to the ground. It came from a small shop that was filled with shadows. I pulled out my knife getting ready to lunge in necessary.

“We need to find a way into the hospital before something gets us.” he whispered to me.

I noticed a ladder that had fallen over laying on the ground near the base of the truck.

“That’s what they probably used to get over.” I whispered back, pointing to the ladder. We started crawling to it when a gunshot sounded and a bullet ricocheted off the ground right next to my hand.

“The fuck?” Noah gasped as we both slammed up against the nearest car.

Another shot went off, flying over the car and smashing into the wall of the store across from us. Noah looked at me and I knew what he wanted me to do. I peeked my head around the corner of the car and quickly ducked back as a shot flew past. “Arahhh” I yelled falling to the ground holding my head.

“Vincent NO!” he yelled loudly and he too looked over the car.

Just as I did he grabbed his face and yelled as the bullet whizzed past him. We got up silently and kept still, each of us at either end of the car. Someone started shuffling and footsteps could be heard walking over some broken glass. Our attacker was just on the other side of the car I could feel it. My heart started racing even faster than before. I had one shot. In a flash I jumped out and shove my knife into our assailants’ chest. His face was coved with a bandana, but I could see the surprise in his eyes. I fell on top of his as he fell backwards.

Noah peaked around the corner.

“Holy fuck.” he whispered.

I pulled my knife out of the man, who was gurgling blood and holding his chest trying to keep pressure on the wound. I walked over, bent down, and slit his throat. Blood spilled everywhere. I looked at Noah who face told me that he was pretty scared that I had just killed the guy in cold blood.

“It had to be done.” I said. I grabbed the rifle that was slung over the man’s shoulder and quickly searched his pockets. I found about ten more shots and a pocket knife. Noah was still staring at the dead man as I walked over to the fallen ladder and rightened it.

“Let’s go.” I said “Daylights awasten.” He nodded and hurried over to the ladder and began climbing.
