After waiting several minutes the doors finally opened and about ten people walked out. They all ignored me as they went different ways down the hallway. Connor was the last to leave. He saw me and sighed.
"Whata you want?" he asked his voice full of anger.
I looked at my feet I knew what he was mad about.... something he would probably never forgive me for.
"You said you wanted to know if anyone ever came across another survivor during the supply runs."
He nodded seeming to grow less angry that I was here for business and not to try and apologize. "Me and Josh were in the Burger King when this guy walked in," I said my voice small "he he." I couldn't finish so I just held up the hunting knife so Connor could see.
He looked at me confused.
"He gave that to you?" he asked incredulously.
"No. He tired to kill us." the last sentence coming out at little more than a whisper.
Connor put his hands on his hips and looked at the ground. He was hoping that anyone else we met would be able to tell us what was going on out the world. The electricity had shut off a day after everything went down so we only saw a small portion of what was happening. We assumed that it was global or at least national because if it had been stopped we were pretty sure we would have been rescued by now. Suddenly his walkie talkie squawked to life.
"Connor we got trouble by wall two." the voice whispered clearly trying to avoid being heard. "I'm turning my talkie off." the voice said and we lost all sound.
We looked at each other you could barely hear them but they were there. That maddening groan.
We took off running slamming threw the doors and jumping down the stairs two at a time. The guard look startled
"Come with us!" Connor yelled, already down to the fourth floor.
We arrived in the lobby to find a large group of people staring out the glass walls that faced the parking lot.
"Everyone get back." Connor hissed gesturing for them to move.
He, me and the guards all quietly pushed the doors open. The smell was what first hit me. The smell of rotting flesh. I gagged as did the other five guards. Connor just wrinkled his nose. We crouched down looking around. We had been working on build a more permanent wall to the east side of the parking lot. We were on the north side and couldn't see around the building because the parking lot surrounded both the north and east side. We crept to the corner of the school and peaked around the edge. Several people could be seen hiding behind the wood and bricks we had scavenged from the surrounding area. The zombies lumbered slowly threw. There were twelve in all their clothes ripped and all sporting some kind of jagged wound on their bodies. Their skin was a pale grey and dried blood covered most of them. A guy saw us and started crawling towards us. In a classic cliché horror movie moment he kicked a tool bag and caused several bricks to fall over. The zombies and kids turned towards the sound and us. A girl let out a high pitch scream as a zombie discovered he hiding spot. They panicked. Seven kids in total ran as fast as they could towards us not even checking to see if the coast was clear or what was in front of them. The zombies caught every one of them. A pair, a girl and a boy went down holding hands as three walked in front of them. They were torn apart in front of each other both staring into the others eyes. The guy who kicked the tool bag was tackled by a particularly large one. It bit into his neck pulling out a large chunk of it. Blood spurted everywhere drenching another girl who was running by. His arm was torn off and thrown onto the ground causing the girl to trip. She stared in shock dripping with his blood as zombie bit into her shoulder. One of the guys was trying to stand in front of the two remaining girls holding out a pocket knife to keep the zombies off him. But one shambled up behind them and pulled viciously at one of the girls pigtails ripping it out. She screamed as the five that the boy had been holding off surrounded and began feasting on the three of them.
It happened in a matter of seconds seven people dead just like that. One of the guards started hyperventilating. Me and Connor just watched, we had seen it before. He looked at the others who looked ready to make a run for it themselves.
"We wait till they are focused on eating," he said shakily, he looked back at the hunched figures before continuing. "-then we kill them."
