Three months later......

Me and Josh walked side by side.

"What about that one?" he asked pointing at a McDonalds with all the windows busted in.

"No, Tony and his guys already cleaned that place out."

"Well if we don't come back with anything Mandy’s gonna throw a fit."

"I know, I know." I said. "Lets go over to the Burger King one last time."

He nodded as we both veered to the left side of the street where the Burger King was.

"You know Mandy gave us double wall duty today!" he said pouting a little.

"Dude, you gotta clear whatever you have with her up." I said "I'm tired of getting stuck with all the shitty jobs with you."

 He smirked.

"I told you she started it and I am not sinking to her level. You know she supposedly cries at night because I 'ruined her reputation'. What a bunch of horse shit. She just wants attention. Always wining about how I 'broke her heart' and stuff."

"You kind of are right now." I said "You know sinking to her level. Talking about her behind her back."

"Pff" he said waving his hand dismissively. "You really shouldn’t lecture my about the ladies" he said cracking a smile "Your 'girlfriend' doesn't even know you exist"

I glared at him.

"Shut up." I said in mock anger.

We had arrived outside the Burger King, the school just another block down. We stood staring into its dark interior.

"Ladies first." I said bowing and rolling my hand.

"Fuck you." he said under his breath.

Josh went in first pulling his knife out. It was one of those cheap Swiss Army knives that had like two things. The blade was dull but I knew it wouldn't kill a housefly. He carried it for the feeling of security. I followed behind him as we walked around the counter. The sun filtered in threw what windows were left making it seem later than it was. We split up rummaging for non-perishable food like buns and condiments. And yes, I had found several un-moldy buns just a few days earlier.

"Thank god for preservatives." Josh called out. "I hit the jackpot."

Hidden under a fallen cabinet was a crate full of chocolate chip cookies and brownies.

"Yes!" I said excitedly "Finally some junk food!"

I hadn't had a chocolate chip cookie since shit went down so I was pretty excited. Me and Josh both lifted the cabinet a little to the left so that we could grab the crate. But in that moment we heard footsteps out in the dining area.

We instinctively dropped to the floor. Josh held his knife so tight I could see his knuckles turning white. The cabinet, only half lifted, was balancing dangerously against the box of goodies. The footsteps grew louder as me and Josh slowly backed up. A crash sounded as Josh accidently kicked a pot that was lying on the floor. The footsteps stopped. My heart began returning to normal speed. Zombies’ don’t stop, they come until they're dead. Again.

A man stepped around the counter and saw the two of us. He also saw the crate of food and smiled wickedly. He pulled out a hunting knife easily a foot long and started walking towards us.

"Sorry boys,” he said “but looks like you're done for."

My mouth opened in horror, one at the terrible one liner the man just came up with, and two the fact that he was going to kill us. Josh did the only thing he could. He threw his blunt knife right at the man. The man side stepped, the knife missing him by a mile. But as moved he kicked the food crate just a little causing the cabinet to fall. On his face.

A disgusting crunching sound enimated from the man’s head as the heavy cabinet crushed his skull.

"Holy fuck." Josh whispered.

"Yeah." I affirmed, stunned at the fact we had almost just died.

"What was that guys problem?" he asked as a pool of blood began forming around the cabinet. "I mean we-we didn’t even do anything." he was growing frantic patting the ground as if trying to confirm he was still alive and here. "We would have shared the food. And.. and..."

"Let’s just.... Grab the food and go." I said standing up.

The man’s body was lying slightly over the crate and we had to shift it a little to get it out. We began walking towards the door, Josh looking back repeatedly at the spreading pool of blood. As a last minute decision I ran back to where the dead man lay. I grabbed his hunting knife out of his hand that was sticking out under the cabinet. I quickly ran back to where Josh was waiting impatiently.

"Let's go." he said and we left the ruined Burger King.
