Everyone began standing up and grabbing their gear.

“But first,” I said turning to Josh. “What the fuck happened?”

Everyone sat back down. Josh sighed slightly and began.

“Well half of us were scavenging the lower floors for medicine and food when we heard gunshots outside. We sent a couple people out to see what was happening.  They didn’t come back. I went and peaked out of the window. There was another group, maybe ten of them. They had everyone lined up hands on their heads guns pointed to their backs. One of them must have saw me cause he shot out the window next to me. He yelled at us to come out. We didn’t. They started tying up some of them when one of our guys a tall senior or something head-butted one of the bandits. He tried to make a run for it but one of them got him with a throwing knife.”

Josh stopped. He inhaled slowly and continued.

“They dragged him in front of every one and stripped him down to his underwear. Then they… they….”

Josh stopped his eyes seemed to be watching something far off.

“What did they do?” I asked my blood chilling at Josh’s hesitance to tell me.

“They doused him with gasoline and lit him on fire.” Jenny said quietly next to me.

I remembered the burned bodies outside.

“Jesus Christ.” I whispered.

“And then they pissed on his body.” Josh added.

I closed my eyes and waved my hand “You don’t have to go into the details.”

“Well by then apparently a small group of zombies heard the gun shots and came wandering over.” Josh continued speaking quieter now. “They were too busy burning him that they didn’t see them. They took down a couple. Then the whole group bolted into a nearby building taking our people with them. We tried to leave but they shot at us. After a day of just sitting around they sent in a small group to get us. We ran up the stairs and blocked the door with the chair. It was good till we realized the entire building was full of them. We’ve been in here since then.”

I ran my hands threw my hair and placed them on the back of my head.

“Well that explains a lot.” I said.

Josh nodded looking down at the floor. It was quite except for the banging on the door.

“What do we do about them?” I asked taking my hands off my head and gesturing to the door.

“They get bored after a while.” Jenny answered looking at me with a worried look on her face.

 “How long before that happens.”

“A few hours.”

I looked around the room

“I guess we’re waiting.”

Three hours later the banging finally stopped. I inched the door open, everyone else bunched up behind me.

“Coasts clear.” I whispered as I exited the room.

We moved bent halfway over trying to stay as quiet and unnoticeable as possible.

“Wait,” I hissed holding my hand up. I turned around and pulled the map out of my pocket. “we have no idea where we’re going.”

One of the group raised his hand.
