Harry P.O.V.
When we walked in I realized we had completely left the ones at the castle to fend for themselves. Panicked I left these thoughts and said,
"Guys we have to get back to the castle and help! We don't know what happened to the others who stayed back!" It took a moment for my words so sink in and then all of a sudden everyone was scrambling to look for something to use as a portkey. Ron came back in with a small, old-looking shovel from outside claiming that it was never used and Mrs. Weasley did the charm to turn it into the transportation device. Once she was finished everyone grabbed hold of the old digging tool and we started our decent to the famed school.
When we landed I made sure I had my arms right around Ginny so we didn't land too hard. When we regained our senses I realized we were in Headmistress McGonagoll's office, surrounded by Death Eaters. I pulled Ginny and James behind me and pulled out my wand in the same instant as did Ron with Hermione. Mrs. Weasley had jumped in front of all five of us as well. Then I noticed all of the retched criminals were tied up, bound, and gagged. I lowered my stance but did not put my wand away. That was until a voice that I had become familiar with over the course of eight years spoke.
"You and your family are safe not Mr. Potter, you can lower your wand." Professor McGonagoll's voice spoke to me.
"What happened? Where are the others?" I asked quickly concerned for everyone's safety at once.
"Well, everyone's alive." She said carefully. That got me worried.
"What else? Who got hurt?" I wanted answers and she was very slowly edging her way to giving them to me.
"There were some losses of limbs and since it was dark magic that took them, they cannot be regrown." I immediately felt terrible. People had to loose pieces of themselves because of me and my history. McGonagoll spoke up then,
"You may go see them if you'd like. They're in the hospital wing. Other people were injured too but nothing major just bruises and some broken bones, nothing Madam Pomfrey can't fix." She dismissed us after that saying we could go anywhere we'd like within the castle. She knew we all had different points of comfort. Hermione and Ron bid us a goodnight claiming that they were going to get the children, who were being watched by a very responsible 3rd year. (Hermione had made sure of that) Ginny and I decided to go down to the hospital wing to help if needed and thank everyone for helping. We sat in silence as we walked though it was quite tense as we didn't know the extent of injury. When we arrived at the grand oak doors I paused in opening hem not knowing if I was going to like what I saw beyond them. I took a deep breath and pushed them open.
What lay beyond was not what I was expecting. People were sitting up and talking sharing their battle stories from only an hour before and when the noticed us, they cheered. Several people got up to congratulate us on our new arrival and to try to get a small glimpse of James.
In one corner I noticed a few people who seemed to be in a sort of critical condition. I pulled Ginny away from her conversation with Luna about how she was in the process of knitting James a tiny baby hat that would drive away the waxpurts to go over. I noticed Draco Malfoy laying on one of the beds with Astoria hovering over him with Scorpius in her arms and went over to him first.
"Hey mate what happened to you?" I asked as I approached his bed. He eyed me strangely.
"Mate?" He asked with a raise of his eyebrow.
"Well yea I believe you deserved some sort of title after you risked you life for my son's." He hesitated then said,
"Alright I'll take what I can get." He said with a small laugh then winced in pain. I realized he hadn't answered my previous question. "What happened to you?" I asked again. He took a deep breath in composing himself before he replied with, "Few cracked ribs and this-" he whipped away the covers from his right leg to show us that only half of it was there. My face dropped and I heard Ginny gasp next to me, I squeezed her hand.
"How-?"
"Once me and Madam Pomfrey had disarmed and bound all the Death Eaters in here we ran to help the others. As we ran down the stair case it was blasted apart and I went flying with it. I slammed into the wall which is what broke my ribs but I barely felt it at that point so I got back up and kept going. The only reason Pomfrey didn't get the blast was because she made it to the landing before me. We kept going only to find ourselves in the middle of a battle. People were shooting and diving to avoid being hit. A curse came flying at me and I dove to try and not be hit but it didn't work. It hit my calf and from then on it was pretty much useless so when we got back here Madam Pomfrey tried to heal it but it only caused me intense pain and wasn't doing anything. Then she realized what spell was used and told me it was either going to spread to my upper leg and eventually my whole body killing me or she could amputate it and so that's what she did." I didn't have and words for that.
"I'm so so sorry that this happened to you Draco!" She said starting to cry. "Thank you so much for your sacrifice." She quickly passed James to me and hugged him. Malfoy groaned in pain. She leapt back, "Oh Merlin I'm sorry I forgot." He smiled, "It's okay Ginny, and besides Pomfrey said she could make me a bewitched piece that works just like t my other one. And look-" he said turning serious "- if this is the sacrifice I needed to make to prove that I'm a hero on the light side I'm not complaining." Ginny nodded, "You are forgiven." I turned to Draco, "What happened to everyone else?" I asked. He pointed over my shoulder, "That girl over there, she's a 5th year, her name's Marissa Tyler, her whole left hand is paralyzed except her thumb. And they-" He pointed to another person laying on a bed behind me. "Are dating. He's another 5th year named Jason Cordero, he was knocked out when he was thrown into a wall but he's alright it's just a concussion." I nodded at least the others' injuries weren't too bad. We talked a bit more with other people until I noticed Ginny swaying on her feet looking tired. I realized she hadn't had any rest since she's given birth to James. I pulled her to my side almost carrying her full weight. We headed to our apartment inside Hogwarts.
"You need to rest. You'll have to be up again to feed James in a few hours and in the meantime you need sleep." Said as we entered guiding her up the stairs as she started to protest but when she almost tripped and fell twice she agreed. I gently set James down in the bassinet at the foot of our bed before scooping Ginny up in my arms and gently placing her in the bed. I slid her shoes off before taking mine off and climbing in next to her and pulling her close. We lay there for awhile and she seemed to be fighting sleep keeping her eyes trained on the baby blue bed that held our newborn son. I realized what she was doing.
"Ginny, love, you don't have to worry he's perfectly safe. Right there at the end of our bed. We both have our wands on our night stands if needed and we're both very light sleepers. He'll be fine but you need to sleep, okay?"
She nodded and curled more into me. "Okay....I love you, goodnight."
"I love you too, goodnight." I said but she was already sleeping soundly.
