Outside of the CIA complex in Langley, Virgina is a large sculpture with letters carved into it. This is the kryptos sculpture a gift to the CIA from artist Jim Sanborn form 1990. The sculpture is written in English letters and with 4 sections. Only 3 of the four have been partially decrypted. From analysis however, the lines are incredibly cryptic with such writings as:
"IT WAS TOTALLY INVISABLE HOWS THAT POSSIBLE? THEY USED THE EARTHS MAGNETIC FIELD X THE INFORMATION WAS GATHERED AND TRANSMITTED UNDERGRUUND TO AN UN KNOWN LOCATION X DOES LANGLEY KNOW THIS?"
The purpose of the writings has not been stated by the artist. Sanborn has occasionally given clues to lines but has not made anything clearer. Clues include translating a section that translated "NYPVTT" to "BERLIN" and "MZFPK" to "CLOCK", possibly a refrance to the Berlin Clock. His final clue so far is the statement that to solve section 4 "You should look into that particular clock. Of course, there's plenty of intresting clocks in Berlin."
He has also stated that he has worked with a former CIA agent. This is also the first of Sanborn ' s cryptic sculptures as after he made Kryptos he made Antipods, Ex Nexum, and Cyrillic projector. All of these involved a code of some sorts.
Many pepole have become interested and have solved parts of the sculpture these range from individuals to the CIA and the NSA. Some of the first where Jim Gilogy, a computer programmer, and David Stein, an CIA analyst. However, they had both solved the same 3 sections.
Finally, it seems that this mystery may not stay unsolved, as Sanborn has stated that if he dies before it's solved someone will confirm the solution.
