The moment it sounded, every head turned towards the town. The robots had found us, and they were going to destroy the village. Th sky turned bright red like your blood, this was the mark of the robots, blood-thirsty killers who don't want to live in harmony and all they are programmed to do is destroy, kill and eliminate. Everyday, I just want to throttle their entire population, I loved when we both lived together as one big family but these pests, they're not sympathetic they'll do anything to have power and food. Maybe twenty years ago, it would have sounded as if it had come straight out of a science fiction book by one. If those famous authors back then but for us, the people who are actually fighting for survival against them, it is so very real and the only way of escape is suicide, I can't do that; I don't choose to live for myself, I do it for Mama, Beth and Jesse, they all need me to be strong, on ten outside I'm this tough kid who's been through everything and can go through anything but really, I soft, hurt easily and need love to stay courageous and strong. I just have a hard shell on the outside and I'm gooey on the inside. I just wish I was born decades earlier, I envy anyone who has been able to enjoy a majority of their life during the 1900s and early 2000s, they got to experience everything, the rise of technology and an invasion free environment, oh how I desire to have a life of no worries...
"Everyone hurry, get out of the open!" I saw Jessie shout at the top of his voice, he needed to keep us all safe, there was a chance they would miss us since we were pretty far from the town. Everyone hurried of the ice, being careful not to trip and break a bone. Luckily the lake was close to a nearby forest. We all grabbed our backpacks and ran towards the cluster of trees away from the town.
Oh my gosh. I cannot believe this is happening. Six years. That's how long we've hidden for, how did they find us now? My heart thumped out my chest and bead of sweat rolled down my face and body, my hands were clammy and red. We need to be quicker!
When I had almost reached the forest, I heard the swoosh of robot planes fly across the sky, they were headed for the town. I could imagine everyone screaming and panicking, I was sure there was be no survivors except for us and the place would be just a whole big crater after they were done. About six or us passed us until they were out of sight. I heard Jesse sigh behind me but we weren't safe, not just yet.
The moment I reached the cover of the tall trees, an explosion shook the ground and knocked me to the ground, the sound made my ears ring and it was hard to hear anything. I lied there for three seconds until the shaking stopped but I knew we only had about thirty seconds before the second bomb would hit. I scrambled back to my feet and ran another fifty meters and came to a complete halt before the ground shook for the second time but I was ready and stayed on my feet. Dropping my backpack, I rushed towards Bethany who was at the back of the group and struggling to run, I swooped her off the ground and sprinted full speed to my resting place.
Just before I reached my backpack, another bombed hit and Bethany went flying out my arms and landed painfully on her arm. She scrunched her face up in agony and rolled onto her back, holding her arm tightly.
"Ow! Ow! Ow!" She groaned as Jesse came rushing to her side. I reached the tree before the final bomb struck and safely planted by butt firmly on the roots. As Jesse tended to Bethany, I checked the other kids for any injuries, they all had bumps and bruises but nothing too serious, they were definitely troopers. I counted all there heads including Cameron, Beth, Jesse and myself, nine. I remember we had ten.
"Jesse! How many did we have?" I asked my brother impatiently.
"Ten, why?"
"Great! Joseph's missing!" I quickly ran back out into the open, I could hear Jesse frantically screaming for me to get back.
"Joseph! Joseph where are you?!" I didn't care about anything other than finding the poor eleven year old.
"Uggghhh...." I heard a soft moan coming from my right. I turned and ran until I saw him. He was lying in the snow on his back, his leg was twisted in a sickly way that made me nauseous, a stream of blood ran down the side of his face from his skull. He had been hurt, I scooped him up and started speed walking back to everyone else, I was glad that the kid only weighed about twenty kilos. Once we safely reached where everyone was resting, I carefully propped him up against a tree and Jesse came of after tend to to Beth's spurned wrist, I was so glad it wasn't too bad though I think a broken leg was unavoidable for Joseph, it will make him twice as slow and that would affect the whole group, I guess Jesse could carry him around though.
My eyes searched for Cameron, there he is! He was leaning against another large tree and looked as if he was mumbling something to himself, his face was plastered with guilt. As I walked towards him, I started to hear what he was saying.
"I knew I shouldn't have disagreed with the Cheif... Now everyone is dead because of me..." He then saw me approach and stopped the conversation with himself and put on a cheesy smile but I knew that it wasn't real.
"What's up?" I ask him.
"Nothing..."
"Nothing? You looked pretty upset just now."
"Yeah, it's just- nothing".
"Okay then..." I started to get up.
"April wait-" He touched my hand and pulled me back down towards him.
He pressed his chapped lips against mine, it was like magic and he's such a good kisser! He wraps his hands around me and we pull closer together.
When he kisses me it's like time has stopped and everyone, everything around us has disappeared and we are the only two things on Earth, I want it too last forever but everything has to come to an end. I pull back out of breath.
"Love you..."
"Love you too..."
